"I want to tell you of the great experience I had with J&J Elite Carpentry. The relationship with them started with the owner Jose Lugo. We had to replace two old staircases that were falling off the wall and also to install hardwood floors in a foyer at the bottom of one of the staircases. After looking over the whole job and taking measurements Jose assured us that the job we needed and wanted could be done. This was important to us because the house is very old and you can imagine that it is not easy to work in old homes. Joseâ s team had to create a staircase around an old sewer pipe in the basement, it was a tricky job and they did a great job of creating a solid staircase to incorporate the pipe - they created the staircase on site. Leo, the head carpenter, ensured that the crew did a good job throughout. Any issues or concerns we had were taken care of. The project ran two days longer than we all expected but that was necessary and they did a beautiful job. Jose was attentive to what was going on and stopped by to see how the work was coming along - he was very pleasant to work with. They stand by their work and that is extremely important. And they cleaned up everything before they left. They did an excellent job - we are happy. We highly recommend J&J Elite Carpentry for your staircases and hardwood floors."

"Rolando and his crew were quick, courteous and professional. He was the first one to respond to my request, and came to my home the day after. He did a good job repairing the balances on my Anderson windows. On top of that, he was willing to teach me the repair so that I can DIY in the future if I want to. Would highly recommend Rolando for window repair works."

"It was an absolute pleasure working with GST Carpentry and Lester! Lester was dedicated to ensuring my dining room vision was brought to life. His work exceeded all of my expectations. I could not recommend this company enough! From start to finish all of the details were discussed with me. Lester sent photo updates throughout the day so I could see the progress. He even went above and beyond to leave my home clean after finishing for the day."

"Contacted Sky's the Limit to patch/repair/paint an older addition. He exceeded our expectations. The work was exceptional, his crew was clean and neat and they completed on time and on budget as promised. Could not be happier with Adrian and his team. It's rare to find an honest contractor these days. Will definitely be recommending him."

"Our experience with Indigo Construction was very pleasing. They recently completed major repairs in our home, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience. The owner, Ryan, was incredibly professional, honest, and easy to work with from start to finish. His communication was excellent, and the quality of craftsmanship was outstanding. Ryan and his team paid close attention to the details and left everything spotless when the job was done. We highly recommend Indigo Construction and will absolutely be using them for all our future projects!"

"They did excellent work at a excellent price. Most companies will look at the job and give you a price, usually building in extra costs for possible unseen issues. Integrated Electrical Solutions charges an up front $125 for coming out and $115/hour. In my case, moving a dining room light fixture, I had estimates ranging from $325 to $570. Because the work turned out to be straight forward their actual cost was $210."

FAQs for carpentry projects in Colonia, NJ

The average cost to hire a woodworker for a project in your home is around $65 per hour, but hourly rates can range from $35 to $250 or more, depending on the experience and skill of the woodworker. Your total woodworking project cost will depend on the complexity of the work, the type of wood, the number of projects, and any other materials your project requires. You could hire a professional woodworker to create everything from a custom cabinet to ornate, unique staircases.

Generally, general contractors charge between $50 and $150 hourly, though not every contractor charges by the hour. If charging based on the project, you can expect a markup of 10% to 20% of the construction cost. You can expect to pay between $300 and $500 daily if charged by the day.

While city and state laws vary on general contractor licensing requirements, hiring an unlicensed general contractor could lead to poor quality work, costly future expenses, and potential code violations. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local general contractor guidelines for your area.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

Every woodworker has different skills and experience, so we recommend asking the following questions when hiring a woodworker for your project:

  • How long have you been in the woodworking industry?

  • What experience do you have with my type of project?

  • Do you have customer references I can speak with?

  • How long do you expect my project to take?

  • What is my recourse if I have an issue with your work?

  • Do you charge hourly or per project?

  • Will you work on-site or in your own workshop?

  • Does your fee include the necessary post-job clean-up?

While they perform similar tasks, a carpenter is responsible for the woodworking that goes into construction—like framing, installing sheathing, and hanging kitchen cabinets—while a woodworker tackles more intricate and custom projects—like building custom furniture and installing wainscoting. Based on these definitions, most woodworkers can tackle the jobs of a carpenter, but you should always ask about your specific project when choosing a woodworker to ensure they have the necessary skills to tackle the job.
