"I was pleased with the work done by Allred Electrical. The process of removing my old fuse box, installing a new panel, having the town inspector come out, and the electric company coming out to remove the old outside box took longer than expected. Allred was short handed because an employee was out due to illness but they have no control over the town inspector's nor Duke Energy's schedules. Even though the process from start to finish took a little longer than expected I was only without power for part of one day by they came back on a Sunday to check on something I thought was a problem. The only problems I can think of were the fact that I couldn't get a detailed invoice prior to the job of what was to be done with a cost break down and I'm waiting for them to come back to add outlets. So I will update this review once the full job is complete."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, the National Electrical Code reviews household codes every three years. However, that doesn’t always mean that kitchen counter outlet requirements will change, but it does allow room for professionals to make updates. That’s why many older kitchens are no longer code-compliant thanks to changing rules for amperage, GFCI protection, and more.

Timers work by using an internal switch to turn power on or off to the cord plugged into it. Just the same way that a light switch turns lights on and off, the timer throws the switch at the programmed times.

To avoid drilling into wire, you will need to trace your home's wiring using a stud finder, wire detector, circuit tracer, or voltage finder. Since locating wires in your home can be difficult for some homeowners, hire a professional electrician with the experience and knowledge needed to safely handle electrical systems before drilling into any walls in your home.

Most ceiling light fixtures only have a black, white, and green wire, but in some cases, you’ll also find a red wire in the box. This is a second hot wire, like the black wire, and is included for ceiling light kits that have a fan.

A faulty light switch can trip a breaker due to circuit overload or a short circuit. A faulty light switch may not always trip a breaker, so don’t use that as your only sign that something’s wrong. Always investigate the cause of a switch that isn’t working properly, feels hot to the touch, or is making unusual noises.
