"I was so impressed with Wilber and his employees that in addition to painting our deck, I also hired him to pressure wash our deck and fence, replace the lattice on our pergola, as well as perform some other minor wood work. His responsiveness, quality of work and price were all excellent and would be hard to match. I have already referred him to several others in our neighborhood and look forward to hiring him again in the future!"

"Wow…. What a great experience. We waited all summer for a local painter to show up, but he never did. No Call, No Show… on and on. New Era, Christian and his crew, returned my call on the same day. Came to the site the next day. Sent me a quote the 3rd day. NOTE: there was a key factor to their schedule, so we were very lucky to fall into an open slot. They showed up first thing Monday. They worked Monday-Friday, completed on time, on budget and the quality was over the top. So glad they talked us into using a quality level of paint from Benjamin Moore. I waited about a month to write this, and every time we go out on the huge wrap around deck, look at the lattice or the windows…. We are still extremely happy and thankful we got to meet and work with New Era. We haven’t prioritized our next project yet, but we’ve already gotten on the schedule for 4 months from now. If you have to wait to have Christian’s group do your job… It’s Worth It."

"Wes and the crew at Straight Edge Painting Pros were outstanding. Wes quickly returned my calls, gave a very reasonable quote, and the crew did an outstanding job repairing damaged wood and staining the house. In addition we had new wood garage doors installed after the house was stained and the Straight Edge team came back right after installation to stain these doors as part of the original estimate. We are very satisfied and would strongly recommend Straight Edge Painting Pros to anyone looking for house painters."

"Southend Painters painted the exterior of my house, stained a deck and provided carpentry work for rotting wood on my front porch. Although the original paint job wasn’t what I expected, they worked with me, applied a second coat and now my house looks beautiful. Throughout it all, they were very courteous and professional."

Small jobs welcome

"Norwood Painting did an excellent job on cleaning our gutters and exterior trim. Our neighbors could not get over how good it looked. In fact, they thought we had repainted them! The job was done quickly and nothing had to be gone back over to retouch. Highly recommend this company."

"We are so happy with the work Alexander and his team did for us - staining our newly installed stair balusters and railings. The quality of work was fantastic, and the team was responsive and professional. We were very impressed with the preparation and care Alexander and his team put into making sure they kept a clean area and prevented any mess with the stain. We absolutely would hire again!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

Adding a second coat of stain to wood can even out the color to some extent, but it won't drastically alter the hue if the initial application is too light or too dark. It's more effective at enhancing the richness of the color rather than significantly changing it. Ensure the first coat is dry before applying the second.

Exterior paints contain more volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, making them dangerous when used indoors. Without the free ventilation of the great outdoors, it can take longer for the fumes to dissipate than interior paint. While you may notice the smell lessening more quickly, you should be wary of paint fumes inside for 48 to 72 hours after it dries.

Many decking oils can help slow down algae growth, but they don't completely stop it. These oils work by sealing the wood, which reduces moisture and, therefore, algae growth. Some decking oils also help protect against UV damage, but they need to be reapplied according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure the decking stays protected.

The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. This helps protect the wood and stain, so you won’t need to resand and restain for at least a decade. Each stain after the first will darken the wood, so be aware of that when choosing a colored stain.
