"Great experience from the start. When I called to schedule the appointment, the woman I spoke to was very helpful and clearly explained how I could find fireplace doors if I didn't want to order through them. She also gave me all the pricing information for their services upfront. The day of the appointment, the technician called before the appointment time to say he was running a little late. When Brett arrived, he inspected our chimneys from the fireplaces and the roof. He explained several issues concerning the deterioration of our chimney's that would need repair. He then noticed an error that a previous contractor made that would have made using one fireplace extremely unsafe. He recommended not using the chimneys until we had the issues addressed and then suggested we forgo having them cleaned at this time. He offered to send us an estimate for the cost of repairing the chimney's, which he did shortly after our appointment. He then inspected the dryer vent, ended up disassembling it, cleaning it, reassembling it and reattaching it to our dryer more securely than it had been previously. He recommended changing the vent due to sizing and again offered to and later did send us an estimate. Finally, he installed the fireplace doors, one of which was very tricky due to the construction of our fireplace. I think what most impressed us was how thoroughly Brett completed each part of our order and that he recommended not spending the money on having the chimneys cleaned until we could use them. He easily could have said nothing, charged us for two cleanings and left. Instead, given the unsafe nature of one fireplace, he may have prevented a future house fire."

"Michael came out to do an inspection on our chimney before we went to use it. I am so glad he did. He found that there had been a fire in the chimney flu and it could have been a major problem had we gone to use it before getting it inspected. He was very helpful to answer all our questions and helped us tremendously. Great job."

"Raul installed two exhaust/light fans in two bathrooms including a bit of rewiring and all ducting in the attic. He was on top of the communication, on time and very fair priced. He's definitely a keeper in my address book and will be getting more work from me in the very near future."

"They completed the work in a timely manner, and it was done just as we asked. We appreciated that Urban Turf responded immediately to my request for an estimate, coming out the same day. And then installed the sod the next day. We would definitely recommend Urban Turf Lawncare and Landscaping."

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

You might be able to turn a normal door into a fire-rated door, but you’re better off purchasing one that meets all NFPA 80 standards. If you want to DIY a normal door into a fire door, you’ll need a self-adhesive intumescent seal, metal hinges, fire-resistant glazing, and a self-closing device, but you’re always better off buying a certified fire door.

Generally, an oil furnace is considered safer than a gas furnace for several reasons. While both types of furnaces can produce carbon monoxide, a leak in an oil furnace is easier to detect due to the smell. Oil furnaces also don't connect to a gas pipeline, which reduces the chance of a fuel leak. Most importantly, heating oil is not combustible, whereas natural gas is highly flammable. This means there is a much lower risk of combustion or explosion with an oil furnace. However, an oil furnace can still pose a fire hazard if it tips over.

While a hot fire can help heat up and loosen tar within your chimney, making it a recommended step before using a creosote log, it will not burn off significant existing buildup on its own. Attempting to remove built-up creosote with a hot fire is dangerous and can cause a chimney fire. For safe and effective removal of caked-on creosote, the best approach is to hire a professional chimney sweep.

Certified fire door inspectors should inspect fire doors. These professionals receive training to specifically assess the condition, functionality, and compliance of fire doors. They often hold credentials from groups like the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) or the International Fire Door Inspector Association (IFDIA). While fire marshals won’t usually do hands-on inspections, they’ll check that doors are being maintained properly during routine safety audits. If a building relies on fire doors for code compliance, it needs someone who understands the details—the difference between a cosmetic issue and a safety failure—and standards to sign off with confidence.

There are several tools available to help prevent electrical fires. First, ensure that you have GFCI outlets installed in necessary areas, along with an AFCI, which is a circuit breaker that can help prevent arc-faults. Investing in surge protectors is also wise, as they can safeguard your appliances and other items against power surges that may overload your outlet and cause sparking.
