"Dillion and his crew repaired the back wall of my house by replacing bricks that were damaged and Tuckpointed it. I also hired them to repair my fireplace damper and to put a liner in my chimney flue. They did an amazing job, cleaned up, and finished in a timely manner."

"Extremely well Hoffman was very helpful with solutions and ideas to make our patio project better than we imagined. They hauled away a the old patio and wooden deck. Dug out and hauled the dirt away and jack hammered the unexpected rock. And made the 40 x20 level and perfect for the stamped concrete and border as well as steps. This made a nice transition to the pool. Could not have asked for better. Great craftsmanship and experienced workers all at a reasonable price and quick. We had ideas and they made it wonderful adding so much more. It all turned out so much better than our original plan. Thanks Phil and Kim Herwig"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can have a gas line professionally installed to convert your traditional fireplace to natural gas; just know it’ll be an extra cost to budget for. The cost to run a gas line where you don’t already have one is about $540, though most homeowners pay between $260 and $820. Your total could be significantly higher if you don’t already have a main gas line running to your home.

The best location for a wood stove depends on your home's layout and venting options. For optimal heat distribution, a central location on the ground floor, such as the living room, is often recommended. If you have an existing, functional chimney, installing the stove there can simplify the venting process. Alternatively, placing the stove near an outside wall can make it easier to route a new chimney through the roof. For safety, ensure no combustible materials are near the stove. Building codes typically require 20 to 36 inches of clearance between the stove and any side walls.

Yes, it’s worth capping a chimney. Here are several reasons to install a chimney cap:

  • Keep out rain, snow, wildlife, and other debris

  • Help prevent chimney fires

  • Reduce your chimney’s exposure to moisture

  • Maintain your chimney flue liner

  • Help reduce energy bills by helping regulate your home’s temperature

For many people, the primary disadvantage of a gas fireplace insert is that it doesn’t look or smell like a classic wood-burning fire. Additionally, the labor costs of installing a gas insert are higher than some other types of fireplace inserts, including electric and pellet inserts. There are also limitations on where you can install ventless gas fireplaces because they’re banned in certain places (including California).

How big a fire pit should be depends on how many people you want to get around it on a regular basis, and how big your space is. The average fire pit size is between 36 and 44 inches. However, if you regularly host big gatherings and have the appropriate outdoor space, you can go as big as 72 inches.
