"Great to work with. Was able to get the closet racks installed the way I wanted. Racks secured by wall studs (for stability) in addition to the typical drywall mounting. Steve J. was great to work with and efficient."

"JJ was amazing to work with from the start. I had never used a closet company before, typically I use my general contractor to install product I purchase off the shelf. Never again will I do this on my own! Home Options is fantastic- I am telling all my friends. The master walk-in closet is beautiful. And it was not that much more money than doing it on my own. They work really fast, it's incredible, and JJ was able to work within my tight timeframe."

"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"The Bear Creek Construction Team was outstanding to work with from the initial meeting through completion of their work. They were responsive to our follow up items and questions. For years, we had been envisioning how best to update our bathroom, laundry room and mudroom closet. The Bear Creek team listened to our ideas as we worked together to finalize the remodeling plans. They had many suggestions and ideas that improved the final result. Dean and the team were great communicators through each step of the remodeling process. We were kept up to date on all aspects of the project on a timely basis. We are pleased and satisfied with the improvements made to our home by Bear Creek Construction. We have have recommended Bear Creek to friends of ours looking for a reputable construction company. We would also call on them for any future construction work we may need."

"I was hesitant to leave them alone in rooms when I couldn't directly supervise them.  There was just a vibe I got.  They did what I asked them to for the most part, but I think, I just overwhelmed her with the amount of things I asked her to do.  A couple of things was forgotten, but I really asked a lot of them.  On the other hand, the entire time they were here, she gave me 8 hours of hard work.  She was a little late, but she notified me that she's going to be late."

"The thought of going through 44 years of memories was overwhelming to my dad, brother, and myself. Living in northern Minnesota made it even more difficult because there wasn’t a company nearby to assist us with this project. Laura and her team were an absolute dream to work with. Her patience and understanding of just how difficult this process was made it so much easier to let go. She is honest and trustworthy, down to leaving spare change she found in a bag for us. Laura made this seemingly impossible and daunting task stress free. I highly recommend Miller Estates and Solutions. -Kelly B. Moose Lake, MN"

Closets questions, answered by experts

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.

If you have a bathroom closet with movable shelves, you can place them at virtually any spacing that works for you. Useful measurements between shelves in the working, or middle, section can be 10 to 16 inches for towels or linens. Lower or higher shelving could be up to 24 inches between shelves to store lesser-used or bulky items or boxes.

Yes, 12-inch shelves are often considered the standard closet shelf depth for storing folded clothing, shoes, and small containers. However, if you plan to store bulky items such as blankets, baskets, or cleaning supplies, you may want to go deeper. For specialized layouts, an adjustable system can give you more flexibility.

You can modernize an old-looking closet by just painting it, but beyond that, consider electric elements like recessed or accent lighting. If this is a large and deep closet, you can consider adding an island to the middle or a nice ottoman on a rug. Luxury closets will have even more items, like felt-lined drawers for watches and jewelry, in-wall safes, electronic shoe storage, or a tablet catalog of their items.

Yes, adding a built-in or custom closet generally increases your home's value and makes it more attractive to potential buyers. A well-designed closet adds utility, organization, and a touch of luxury, which are appealing selling points. Most homeowners see a return on investment (ROI) of 50% to 60%; for example, a custom closet can add about $1,000 to your home's value on average. The specific ROI depends on the type, with custom walk-in closets typically providing more value than reach-in closets. However, to maximize value, ensure the closet doesn't significantly detract from the room's usable square footage. Converting an entire room into a closet can actually lower your home's value. Similarly, using overly lavish materials may not recoup their cost. A good strategy is to add a closet that takes square footage from a non-living area, such as a garage, to create a mudroom closet.
