"Matt was up front about the cost and understood our policy to obtain estimates from 3 companies before proceeding with work in our home. He itemized the estimate and explained the procedure and warranty. He was pleasant to work with! He did not require an hour of my time or insist that both my husband and I be present in order to give us a sales pitch. The price was competitive and not inflated to cover marketing expenses. I like that the company is family owned & local, and that the workers are employees, not sub-contractors. The men who did the work were efficient and we have had no water in our basement since the waterproofing was done. I believe the contractors who followed Acculevel's work were a little surprised at the materials used, and they had to adjust their plans somewhat, but all is good in the end. Thank you!"

It was time replace the heater so I asked Northern if they could remove the heater and install the new one the next day. They were fine with that. The workers were very professional and friendly. "I hired Maltese to waterproof my basement in a house which was built in 1896 and required serious mold remediation and complete waterproofing. Tom has excellent customer service skills, responded promptly to all communications, provided very detailed invoices and worked very hard to assure I was completly satisfied with the outcome. Although the work needed was far more extensive once they scaled the walls, and assessed the situation, Tom worked to assure that additional costs were more than fair and the crew performed a number of additional services at no charge. The Maltese crew arrived promptly each day and provided backbreaking work to assure that the job was complete. They did an excellent job. My basement is completly dry! Maltese is the best contractor I have had the pleasure to work with and would recommend them highly to anyone who requires basement waterproofing."

"From start to finish Luke did a fantastic job with our project. We needed our driveway apron raised so it would be level with our garage and needed several voids filled in to prevent further water damage. I called on a Friday and Luke drove out to us on the following Tuesday to give us a quote. He took the time to explain his approach to the project, estimated cost, and even provided us with a free tube of caulk (even though we hadn’t committed to his services yet). He was friendly and professional and did a great job for a very reasonable price. We would definitely use Slab Boss services again and recommend them to anyone who needs a polyfoam lift or void filling."

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

Yes, if your crawl space is prone to humidity, a dehumidifier can help keep it dry. For use in a crawl space, you’ll need a high-capacity and high-efficiency dehumidifier with built-in air filtration. It’s also wise to purchase one with a self-draining feature. Otherwise, you’ll need to climb into the crawl space to empty the dehumidifier.

Make sure you're calling in the right expert to help repair and/or clean your crawl space. A serious issue may require multiple experts that include a local mold remediation pro, an HVAC pro, a foundation pro, and a plumber. You should also consider using a nearby junk removal service to avoid handling debris that could be covered in mold, fungi, rot, or asbestos.

Many prevention methods can be used individually or in combination to waterproof your basement. Some of the most common waterproofing methods include:

  • Using dehumidifiers

  • Silicate concrete sealers

  • Vapor barriers

  • Baseboard channels

  • Drain tile systems

  • Waterproofing paint

  • Drainage systems

  • Epoxy injection

  • Interior French drains

  • Exterior excavation and waterproofing

  • Cement waterproofing

  • Weep tiles

  • Liquid membrane

  • Sheet membrane

  • Yard grading

  • Gutters and downspouts

Encapsulation can take the place of crawl space vents since it protects the area from moisture and air all year round. Determining whether you should open or close crawl space vents can be complicated since it often depends on the weather and humidity. Skip this step by investing in crawl space encapsulation whenever possible.

In most cases, yes, because the large majority of basements leak or will have moisture issues at some point, and waterproofing methods can mitigate that risk or eliminate it entirely. Plus, water and moisture issues can be quite problematic, as they can lead to mold growth, rotting of building materials, structural damage, poor indoor air quality, increased electric bills, and other problems.
