"Project taken care of in less than two weeks. We now have more closet storage for our clothing plus shelving for so much more. Prior to the closet remodel, we could not even close our closet door and now we can. Great work! Would hire again."

"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"Fantastic! My applicator, Nick Weidman did a thorough analysis and then went to work on our home. From top to bottom Nick took care of our spider and ant problem. He swept the house, applied both granual and spray products while continuing to stay in touch to insure all problems were taken care of. Job well done."

"I had these windows put in in two stages so I talked to three different sales people, Jim L, Keven S,and Troy D. All three where very friendly, knowledgeable, prompt and attentive. I had estimates from two other companies at the same time and went with Wellington because of the product and the contact with these three people. The first windows were ordered on 12/19/2006 and installed the week of 01/26/2007. The second set of windows were ordered 02/08/2007 and installed the week of 03/02/2007. We had the same install crew for both sets of windows and I am sorry I don't remember their names because they were a very professional and pleasant team to work with. They were on time and made sure the floors were covered because of the need for many in and out trips while installing the windows. They did a great job of clean up on completion. The only major draw back was, We had three windows that had stress cracks that had to be replaced and it took a month to get them replaced."

Closets questions, answered by experts

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.

Building custom cabinets or built-in furniture yourself is possible, especially for basic designs, if you have woodworking experience. For a professional result, hiring a service is recommended to ensure precision, high-quality craftsmanship, and superior finishes.

A standard walk-in closet has dimensions of 7 feet by 10 feet at a minimum and an average of 100 square feet. Remember that the dimensions of the closet aren’t necessarily the usable space. This means that a 100-square-foot walk-in closet with shelves on each wall and an island may only have a walkable area of 50 square feet or less. Make sure you consider the effect of additions when you plan the room—mockups are a great idea.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.
