"Jeremy was very pleasant and straightforward. He recommended I wait to change out a wall thermostat because of new technology that would be coming out soon which would most likely replace my two separate controls for A/C and heat. I appreciated this tip."

"As a preface, I have been in technology engineering for over 20 years and I research before I buy. A few days ago our 2007 Bryant 95i furnace died and it was time to replace. I reached out to 5 companies to obtain proposals for installing a new furnace, A/C, and whole home humidifier. I extensively researched companies, products, and pricing for both the equipment and installation costs. I looked at Goodman, Amana, Carrier, Daikin, etc. and Lennox and felt that the Lennox product line had the quality and comfort features I was looking for. HVAC technology has come a long way and Lennox has developed furnaces, A/C, and humidifiers that communicate with each other and can be controlled from a smart thermostat touchscreen as well as an app on your phone. This is absolutely the way to go if you are planning to replace the equipment in your home. After receiving several proposals, the last company I met was Hoffman Cooling & Heating. Jim came to our home and arrived on time. His punctuality meant something to me in an era where everyone is running late or gives you 4 hour windows. Jim is the kind of sales guy you can only hope to work with. He was informative, authentic, genuine, and he listened to our wants/needs. He didn't try to box us into a specific product. He was not pushy at all and didn't try to force us to make a decision right there. Jim put together a really solid proposal and clearly went through each item in the proposal. There were zero high pressure sales gimmicks. He was great. Because I already had several bids and had researched equipment prices and installation costs, I was very pleased with his proposal. Hoffman offers extremely fair pricing and they are very experienced with Lennox equipment (which I wanted). You don't want to go with the cheapest or the most expensive. You want to go with the guys that offer a fair price in the middle, are experts on the equipment you want, and know how to install properly. In fact, a big part of my selection process was making sure the install was done right. You need installers who have done hundreds of installations and have a passion for the HVAC profession. I threw a lot of qualifying questions at Jim and he impressed me with his overview of how Hoffman installs. We stood in my utility room and I went through my items (ensure secure gas line, air-tight seals on the ducts, proper tilt for the side-venting/intake, the A/C coil tilt, etc.) Jim listened, confirmed, and even took notes for the installers. Because of this, we selected Hoffman. We purchased the SLP98V Variable-Capacity gas furnace with the SL18XC1 A/C from Lennox, their standard Bypass Humidifier, and we went with the iComfort s30 smart thermostat. These came with a 10 year parts and labor warranty from Hoffman which gave us piece of mind. In my opinion, make sure you get a furnace with a variable speed ECM motor and modulating gas valves. Also invest in the smart thermostat. The next day, Andrew and Jay came to install. These guys know what they are doing and are actual employees of Hoffman (not subcontractors). They were extremely competent professionals and really nice guys. They did a pre-install overview and answered all my questions. After that they laid down tarps to keep our home clean, installed the equipment 100% properly, were gentle with the equipment as they brought it into the house and set it up, did perfect post-install cleanup, final gas/exhaust/safety checks, and even showed us how to setup and use the smart thermostat. You cannot ask for better installers. These guys were master-level at their trade. In summary, our experience with Hoffman was unparalleled and we highly recommend them. I was so pleased I contacted their owner Scott to say thank you. I had a great conversation with Scott and can tell he is a good man that runs an ethical and high quality company. They won our business for life. You cannot go wr..."

"Techs were on time, called ahead when on their way, pleasant, explained what needed to be done and why. The part was replaced under warranty so only paid the labor with 10% discount for being on their annual plan. $192 includes AC check in spring and furnace in fall. I can trust Standard to only recommend what is actually needed and their expertise is top-notch."

"

We can't say enough about this provider!  Not only were they great in communicating and arriving promptly, their pricing was a much better value than the other two bids we received.  Such professional and quality service, too!  We ran into some headaches with our cabinet install, and they graciously made two trips--without increasing the bid.  We'll never use anyone else!  HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

"Mike and his crew spent approximately 5 months working on multiple areas in and around our home. We added a third stall garage and mudroom/laundry room to the first floor, we added a basement bathroom, remodeled a 4 season porch to use year around as an additional main floor living space, bumped out a small second floor bedroom to add an additional bathroom and larger bedroom to make a master bedroom and en suite bathroom and finally a new 6 foot cedar fence to keep the dogs in our yard. Mike was quick and responsive to our initial meetings, questions, ideas and budget. He was able to creatively rethink the layouts of several of our rooms to keep our budget in check and still give us everything we were wanting. As the owner and general contractor, Mike kept all of his crew moving, supplies delivered and his several sub contractors on time. Mike and his crew are full service...they can frame up, handle tree work, install doors & windows, install siding, install cedar fencing, lay tile, sheetrock, paint, complete finishing work, etc. Mike was able to get our foundation work completed in October so his crew could work all winter long rather than waiting 9 months to start due to our freezing winter temps. We had a standing weekly appointment, at our home, to go over the progress, answer our questions and talk about next steps. Keeping the lines of communication open was huge considering we had no idea how much knowledge and work was necessary for the size of job they were working on. Mike's crew dealt with our 2 dogs during the day and 5 people attempting to live in the construction areas while they worked! We were very pleased with Mike and his crew. We will immediately turn to Higgins Construction when we have any additional renovation/construction needs."

Subcontractors questions, answered by experts

When planning a general remodeling project, it's important to define the scope of work, understand your goals, and set a clear, detailed budget. You should also assess the current structure and consult with professionals like architects or contractors. Create a realistic timeline for each phase, obtain any necessary permits, and build in contingency plans for potential delays or unforeseen issues. Regular communication with all involved parties is crucial to streamline the process.

While concrete walls do not need to "breathe" in the traditional sense of the word, they do require waterproofing and dehumidifying methods, particularly in basements below the water table. Concrete both contains moisture from its initial installation and can absorb water when exposed. Ensuring proper basement ventilation , installing a vapor barrier, and controlling water exposure are all important tasks.

Structural engineers draw structural plans, which include detailed drawings of the structural components of a home only. Complete house plans will require additional work from an architect or draftsperson, whose drawings will take the structural drawings into account. They’ll also include more details about the finishing materials and layout of a home, including everything from roofing and flooring materials to the position of furniture, light fixtures, switches, and plumbing fixtures.

Yes, modular homes offer a wide range of customization options for layout, finishes, and features.

A floor plan is a less detailed illustration showing a building or room's layout from above, including elements like windows, doors, walls, and fixtures. It offers a simplified view for homeowners. In contrast, a blueprint is a more detailed, to-scale architectural drawing that includes all parts of the building plans, such as structural elements, construction details, and utility schematics. While a floor plan can be a type of view within a blueprint, the complete blueprint contains all the necessary details to turn the plan into a reality.
