"Very impressive! Roger and his team are consummate professionals. We had Roger and several other masonry contractors out in the spring to give bids on the above described work, and were surprised by how high all the quotes were, so we decided to hold off doing the work until later in the year. While Rogers Masonry was not the lowest of the bids, it was competitive. But what really made Roger stand out over the several months between bidding and hiring was his clear knowledge about, and genuine passion for, the work that he does (he's been in the business since 1976 and his lead crew member has been with him for 20 years!). But even more impressive was Roger and team's vast experience working on grand homes throughout the historic Cathedral Hill neighborhood of Saint Paul, and the fact that they actually enjoy working on these older homes?a quality that's increasingly difficult to find in contractors anymore. As a proud owner of an 1894 home in a historic area of Saint Paul, it's no easy feat finding contractors who do excellent work; are true craftsman; are respectful, courteous, and a genuine pleasure to communicate with; and on top of it all actually share your passion for your home and historic architecture in general. Needless to say, I'm thrilled to have found that truly unique combination with Rogers Masonry. Thank you, Roger and team!

"I hired Luke to fill windows wells that we wanted to eliminate. He was thorough in explaining the process to me and was even able to give me a bid using pictures I had sent him (due to COVID-19 we were/are trying to reduce exposure). So many of our home projects that we have tackled with contractors have had some sort of issue (joys of a fixer upper). However, this project went off without a hitch. Luke and his crew were professional, courteous and efficient. Our basement walls look flawless! I will 100% use Severson Masonry again and refer him to others. Thank you for being awesome!!"

Customers say: Super punctual

"Crosstown Concrete is perhaps the best referral we ever received. Every member of Greg's concrete and paving crews are highly skilled and experienced. The quality of their work and their attention to detail would be hard to match. On top of that, they were all friendly, courteous and ready to answer any questions and respond to any requests. Easy to work with!!"

"This was not an easy job! The granite patio is absolutely beautiful. Some other contractors wouldn't even talk about using that product. Al and team were prompt, professional and competitively priced. When we ran into a minor misunderstanding on finishing work, he made sure I was absolutely happy with the result before he called it a job. I wholeheartedly endorse Goodfellows."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.

Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.

The premise for painting a brick building is fairly simple: Prime the bricks to seal the surface and apply the top coat to protect your brick home. However, it’s easy to miss a few important steps if you’re starting from a raw brick surface and don’t know the basics of how to paint brick. So be sure to reach out to a local professional painter if you have any reservations about correctly painting your brick house.

Cobblestone can be made from many different types of stones but the most common ones, by far, are granite, basalt, limestone, and sandstone.  If you are laying a brick paver patio or other such project, the medium is different. It’s rare, but cobblestone can also be made from marble, slate, jasper, and other types of rock. Technically, you can make cobblestone from almost any type of rock, but if it is weather-resistant and stands the test of time is another question entirely.

Masonry is an umbrella term that involves adhering individual building materials together using an adhesive, so many different things are considered masonry. These include constructing stone or brick walls or facades, installing stucco siding, installing backsplashes or tile floors, and even installing glass block windows, in some cases. Masonry materials include natural stone, clay bricks, concrete bricks, glass blocks, and tiles.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.
