"Upon arrival, the crew spread out and started attacking the problem areas of my lawn. They cut back roses, shrubs, crepe myrtle, etc. They blew dead leaves out of the flower beds, weeded, edged, and spread mulch (black, as I had specified). Extremely thorough!"

"I am very satisfied with the repair work that was done on my patio pavers, the downspout burial/extensions, the laying of sod along the right side of my driveway and front street curb as well as the removal of a large 15 foot arborvitae tree and its replacement with a 4 foot tall dragon lady holly tree. What initially sold me on using Pro Landscape was the professionalism displayed by David the owner and his companies proposals to include cost edstimates which were much more detailed and easily understood than other contractors I met with. Further, when speaking with other members of his staff they were professional and friendly each time I interacted with them. I will definitely use ProLandscape again when the need arises."

"The whole project (installing a retaining wall) was seamlessly executed and I was completely satisfied. Because John K. took the time to carefully and patiently explain the various options and the details of how the project would unfold, I chose D&D (of course, the competitive price was also key). They took care of all the approvals with the HOA, began work on time as scheduled, and finished a day ahead of schedule,"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes, trenchers can go through gravel. Gravel is made up of smaller, softer rocks that certain trenchers are able to cut through. Just be sure to use a rock wheel trencher or chain trencher, both of which are made to cut through rocky landscapes and gravel pathways without dulling the teeth or chain.

Landscape edging is more DIYable than trenching. You can DIY your own digging projects, but proceed carefully and only with proper knowledge of the equipment and appropriate safety measures in place. Keep in mind the project's scope and estimate how long it will take you to do it on your own. While you can certainly save money by DIYing home improvement projects, you can’t exactly hide an unfinished—or worse, ruined— landscaping job from the neighbors. It’s always safer to call an excavation pro near you to get an estimate.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

The cost to repair a crawl space runs between $1,500 and $15,000, depending on the extent of the damage. Major flooding or water repairs can cost up to $10,000 for removal and repairs. If you simply need to clean your crawl space, expect to pay between $2,000 and $6,000 for a major cleanout. Replacing a crawl space beam due to rot or damage can cost between $1,500 and $5,000, while removing and replacing damaged insulation costs between $1,000 and $4,000.

A mini excavator can dig between 5 and 11 feet deep, depending on the type and size of the mini excavator. Mini hydraulic excavators are more powerful and can reach deeper into the earth, but electric models have a more limited range. Mini excavators over two tons in size are also more powerful and able to dig as deep as 11 feet.
