"We have had NovaExteriors replace all our gutters, windows, sliding doors and front door over the last several years from the contractor grade products that the town house was built with. We have been very pleased with everything. They installed our steel front door about 10 years ago and we started to have issues with the deadbolt not aligning with the door jam and the rubber sweep wearing out over time. "Ferney and his team did an excellent job of taking down old walls, replacing portions of the ceiling and walls, building new walls, and installing electrical outlets and switches. They installed new doors and molding and prepared the new walls for painting, including priming the walls. They took pride in their workmanship and on several occasions worked well into the night, to get the project completed as soon as possible. Spacing a door is tricky since you need to leave enough of a gap for the door to move freely and not get stuck when the slab and frame contract and expand in dry and humid conditions. The ideal gap between a doorframe and slab is 1/8 of an inch. If the gap is any larger, the door will feel drafty. But if the gap is any smaller, the slab can get stuck due to weather changes.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

If you took measurements of the door and can’t find the correct size in the store, you may need a custom-size screen door. Many door manufacturers produce doors fit-to-size using individualized dimensions. Another option, if the door opening is smaller than standard, is to have the door frame opening cut larger to accommodate a standard-sized door.

You put shims between the three-sided frame to which the door hinges are attached and the framing of the rough wall opening. Using shims like this will center your door in the wall opening and allows you to make small adjustments to get your door plumb and level for smooth operation. Your shims and the gap they fill will be covered when you install door trim, so don’t worry too much about the appearance.

Like many common door problems, warping can be caused by improper installation. When a door isn't installed correctly, there's a good chance that the poor seal is allowing moisture and drafts to seep through. When this happens, humidity will build up in the wood until it swells and warps.
