"This was the second time I used R & L and I was very pleased with the process and outcome both times. Moved everything off the deck prior to pressure washing. Came back the next day to replace 5 rotted boards. Returned the third day to apply two coats of stain. Came back a final time to put furniture back on deck."

"Due to on-off rain, they had to come do several visits, and touched up rain-stained new paint to make sure the end product was good. We are very satisfied with their work and would no doubt work with them again."

"They did a fantastic job on my large 2 level deck! They were very careful not to get stain on the patio underneath or the new siding on the house! We were so pleased with their professionalism and attention to detail that we also had them pain the entire main level of our house, walls and ceiling. Again, a beautiful, careful and professional job from prep to finishing touches! They also removed a decorative column that has plagued me for years and you would never know it was there now. I plan to hire them again for future jobs in our home. Excellent!!"

Customers say: Quick response

"This is our second project with Carlos, Mario and Mario from AW Painting. They did some interior painting; power-washed a brick walkway; power-washed and painted a wood deck; replaced some rotten retaining timbers under a deck (a truly difficult job); and made various other small repairs around the house. They came within the promised window, and the work was careful, detailed and flawless. One of the projects had to be revised mid-course, and the adjustment to the bill was fair and reasonable. They take great pride in the quality of their work. We will turn to them again for future projects."

"Stan's Home Improvement power washed and stained my deck, three fences and stucco basement wall very quickly. The job looks great and the price was reasonable. He is a young company, but has previous experience. I have already recommended their services on Nextdoor in my community."

"We were very please with Spiros! They prepped and painted the top of our metal deck. Both Father and Son worked very hard and did a great job. We will certainly use them again in the future.

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

DIY is possible but presents risks of uneven surfaces or improper adhesion; professionals offer expertise to ensure a lasting finish.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

Staining a deck is typically less expensive upfront than painting. The cost to stain a deck professionally averages around $850, with most homeowners paying between $550 and $1,250, depending on the deck's size. A DIY staining project can cost less than $100. The cost to paint a deck ranges from $500 to $2,000. While the initial cost of staining is lower, it's important to consider long-term expenses. Paint can last up to 10 years, whereas stain needs to be reapplied every few years, which could lead to higher costs over time.

Wood stain is typically dry to the touch within 6 to 12 hours, but it is not fully cured at this point. You should wait at least 24 hours before applying a second coat or a protective finish. For surfaces like decks, avoid walking on them for at least 24 to 48 hours, and wait even longer before placing furniture. The full curing process can take from 24 hours to one week, depending on the type of stain. Factors like high humidity and cold temperatures can extend drying and curing times, so it's wise to allow for extra time in these conditions.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.
