"I called Day & Night Plumber again because I had a good experience with their plumber Lal last time. His brother Saul(?) came this time to replace the toilet. As the brother, he explained everything in detail and did the job carefully. There was a little communication problem at the beginning. I called in for a toilet replacement two days earlier and instructed them to come with a specific toilet that I want from Home Depot. I texted the dispatcher the screen shot of the product from Home Depot's website and got her to confirm the job. But the plumber apparently did not get the information so he had to go out to get the toilet which added an extra hour to the job. But overall I like this company. It's small the job quality is consistent. The price is also reasonable. Will hire again for sure."

"Fred came out the same day, tried several approaches but determined eventually that I needed a new toilet. He had it in the truck and installed it and included a quality seat. Fred is professional, friendly and made suggestions about maintenance, All in all, it was a good experience and he is now our plumber."

"Lal arrived on time in spite of an impending storm. He quickly identified the problem and cleared a blockage that was 65 feet out. He also installed a new toilet and did a fantastic job. He provided us an accurate quote. Very professional and knowledgeable."

"I had a great experience. Patrick was the first to call, in a matter of 5 minutes after I received the email. When he came over, he identified the problem. He corrected the problem with my toilet and also replaced the worn sump pump that was also a problem. He was very personal, friendly, knowledgeable and did a great job explaining the needed repairs. The prices were also reasonable. I would highly recommend this contractor."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Yes, you should caulk a toilet to the floor for several reasons. Bathrooms are constantly wet—and if water splashes out of your shower and collects on your floor, you don’t want it seeping underneath your toilet, where it could potentially cause damage. Plus, caulk adds stability and helps prevent your toilet from wobbling.

A toilet flapper will remain open when the chain that it is connected to is too short. The chain should lift the flapper just enough to allow it to open the rest of the way on its own. The chain should have just about half an inch of slack.

The cost of making a bathroom accessible can be $3,000 to $25,000, but you could spend as much as $50,000 building a brand-new ADA-compliant bathroom. Some bathroom accessibility upgrades to consider include:

  • Installing grab bars: $100–$500

  • Lowering cabinets and vanities: $1,200–$2,500

  • Installing modified doors: $700–$1,500

  • Installing a modified toilet: $400–$1,000

  • Installing an accessible sink and faucet: $100–$1,000

  • Adding a walk-in tub: $1,100–$17,000

  • Converting a bathtub into a walk-in tub: $350–$1,000

  • Installing a wheelchair-accessible shower: $2,000–$7,500

  • Installing a shower ramp: $16–$300

If you’ve accessed the bolts and nuts that hold your toilet seat in place and can’t unscrew them, it’s possible that they were overtightened or that the material corroded over time, making it impossible to unscrew. If that’s the case, you can either call in a plumber for help, or you can DIY a solution if you’re careful. Lay down masking tape around the mounting bracket and then use the tape as a surface to lay a hack saw blade. Move slowly to cut through the bracket and bolt, being careful not to damage the porcelain in the process.

Tools include a wrench, plunger, and wax ring. Professionals use specialized tools for complex installations.
