DJ arrived promptly for our estimate, grasped the nature of my request, and clearly explained the pitfalls. When I accepted their bid, they arrived beyond prompt. They also put particular care into tarping my belongings and protecting the flooring that wasn't being replaced. Before beginning, we walked through the project once more. Concerns were once again expressed, managing my expectations. The project took place over 3 days. Considerate of their early arrival on day one, I awoke to find them parked and waiting for the scheduled arrival time. The end result exceeded expectations in terms of quality and precision. I spoke with several representatives, from the estimator, to the project manager, to the tiler, to the woodworker, to billing: all were completely on the same page. Prices were a little high, but it's the most professional experience I've ever had with a contractor, and money well spent. Definitely working with them again in the future. They figured out how to make a small incision in the top wooden window frame molding to make both rods clear the windows and shades. With my guidance, they set the brackets in place, at a height that make all 4 curtains fall just below the window sill . The only drawback for me was the cleanup. The drop cloths they brought into my house still had dust in them. I had placed bathmats on the radiator covers in front of the windows for their tools and the brackets. After cutting out a piece of the woodwork to make the brackets work, there was sawdust and small debris. I had to sweep that up as well as vacuum up after them. They showed up at the time promised and were done in about an hour and a half. They used drop cloths to protect the porch floor and the surrounding plants. They sanded, primed and painted 3 front porch posts w/ 2 coats of paint. They caulked porch ceiling cracks and painted with 2 coats of paint. Walter had purchased the Benjamin Moore paint in the colors I had chosen and I paid the bill of $242. They then moved inside the house and again carefully placed drop cloths on the wood stairway and hallway up and down. Walter patched hallway cracks and skimmed over imperfections in the 88-yr old walls. He used Kilz, I believe, on the hallway walls where patching and skimming were needed. While the hallway prep dried, the painters set about covering bedroom furniture that could not be relocated and moving other items that could be relocated. They covered the bed, dresser, TV, night stands with plastic drop cloths and the floor with a heavy canvas drop cloth. They spent about 6 hours on-site on Day One. On Day Two, they returned at the agreed upon time of 9:30 AM, again put down hallway drop cloths and painted the hallway walls, excluding the trim. In the bedroom they took down the 3 window curtains and, at my insistence, the window shades as well, using a step ladder. (I was concerned that the shades and curtains not be damaged, as a previous painter had done by reaching up to remove them without using a step ladder.) The Gil painting crew have steady hands as they did not use painter's tape for edging next to the woodwork. Nevertheless, there were no problems. They primed the bedroom walls and applied two coats of paint in the course of the day. They cleaned up after themselves, replaced furniture and window coverings. They spent about 5 1/2 hours on-site on Day Two, the final day. One of my criteria for workmen is how many jobs their job creates for me after they leave. In the case of Gil Painting Co, I spent about an hour returning clothes to a closet, cleaning floors and windows that should have been cleaned anyway, and another hour trying to adjust one window shade which would not "stop" at regular intervals. This required using a step ladder, reading internet advice on how to repair it. I also had to touch-up paint a small part of the hall woodwork that I had pointed out to one of the painters, but which was not done. The labor estimate Walter Gil provided was $3200 for the 3 tasks. The 3 painters were on-site for 11 1/2 hours during two days. Which, if i did my arithmetic correctly, works out to approx. $93/ hr per man. I am pleased with the quality of the work and the result. But I do feel that the price was above normal. I have used Gil Painting Co over the years and have been pleased with their professionalism, friendliness, and punctuality.

He had a few suggestions on things we could do to reduce cost and make the pantry and desk more secure. The concept we were basing this on was a design by an interior designer, so there were practical things that we needed to add to the design to improve it. Mark provided estimates based on different options. The estimates were consistent with what other contractors were quoting us - Mark's wasn't the highest, but it wasn't the lowest, either. We liked Mark the most in terms of customer service and attention to detail, but at the end of the day, there was a bid substantially lower than the others. If we have future woodworking or cabinet needs, we will definitely consider contacting Victory Design and Woodworking. We'd also highly recommend him for anyone in DC, particularly Capitol Hill. Several roofers came to give estimates but never put in a bid. Hausler did and wrote a conditional contract for all the possibilities that we might unearth under the siding, thinking that it should most likely be a one week job. We signed the contract in October with a November start date, which was pushed back to January, which finally began in late February. From there, the work was sporadic -- the crew would show up one day and work, then not show up again until the next week. The first phase of removal took until late February, at which point it turned out that the box gutters would have to be rebuilt (which was a known possibility going into it). They finished with the side of the house, and then said they wouldn't be able to work on the front until mid-April. After some protestations, they were able to start earlier than expected, but then mentioned that they needed to have an outside electric line turned off in order to finish, which required two weeks before the power company could be brought into the loop, which resulted in the job finishing in mid-May. Meanwhile, all the other contractors we had scheduled for finishing the outside with the expectation that everything would be finished in March had to be pushed back, and we're just getting back onto schedules in August after having unprotected woodwork on the outside of our house all spring and summer. The work itself was well done, my rep at the company was always prompt to get back to me, and this was a very exploratory job so some of the scheduling problems were surely unavoidable and the experience on a straightforward project might be much different. They got everything done within the cost range we were expecting, and resolved everything that we pushed back on. That said, if time is of the essence, I'd have doubts about using them. If they'd have finished up two months earlier, I'd have given them an A. Smithwright Home Improvement is licensed with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission since 2004 under license# 89597. I've done mostly flat-fee work under contract with the home owner. Small projects, or handyman related work, bills out at $80/hour with a 3 hour minimum. Angie's List customers receive a 10% discount off labor charges that invoice over $500.00. Discounts do not apply to materials cost which are in addition to labor charges. I do not add any additional costs to materials. You pay what I pay. In the 20 years since I started this business, I have served hundreds of home owners in this area doing everything from simple drywall work to building large room additions and decks. I pride myself in delivering results that far exceed my customer's expectations. (Please note, the nature of my work can make it quite difficult to take phone calls during the day. The last thing I want is to offend anyone by not picking up or not returning phone calls. Please contact me via text at 410-707-5542 or email at [email protected] as well and I will try to respond to you within 24 to 36 hours. Thank you!).
"This was the very best contractor experience that I can ever remember. Mr. Smith (Bill) was on time for both estimate and work and took better than exceptional effort to leave the area even better than he found it. I would strongly recommend him for your future needs. You will not regret your selection. RDL"

FAQs for woodworking projects in Colesville, MD
The average cost to hire a woodworker for a project in your home is around $65 per hour, but hourly rates can range from $35 to $250 or more, depending on the experience and skill of the woodworker. Your total woodworking project cost will depend on the complexity of the work, the type of wood, the number of projects, and any other materials your project requires. You could hire a professional woodworker to create everything from a custom cabinet to ornate, unique staircases.
Hiring a woodworker can be expensive, depending on the job, but it’s very often well worth the investment. Woodworkers are able to provide custom pieces of furniture and handmade construction to present a finished product that is exactly to your specifications. If you have a specific vision for a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture or home feature, the cost of hiring a professional woodworker is worthwhile. Plus, you’ll often get a higher quality product than what you could buy in stores for a fraction of the price.
Every woodworker has different skills and experience, so we recommend asking the following questions when hiring a woodworker for your project:
How long have you been in the woodworking industry?
What experience do you have with my type of project?
Do you have customer references I can speak with?
How long do you expect my project to take?
What is my recourse if I have an issue with your work?

While they perform similar tasks, a carpenter is responsible for the woodworking that goes into construction—like framing, installing sheathing, and hanging kitchen cabinets—while a woodworker tackles more intricate and custom projects—like building custom furniture and installing wainscoting. Based on these definitions, most woodworkers can tackle the jobs of a carpenter, but you should always ask about your specific project when choosing a woodworker to ensure they have the necessary skills to tackle the job.
It may seem simple to install trim, wainscoting, and other finishing wood in your home, but the work is complicated and often frustrating. Getting small trim pieces to line up evenly without gaps and look streamlined in a finished product is a real challenge for DIYers, even if you have the necessary tools. We recommend hiring a professional woodworker for these more intricate projects. They’ll get the job done more quickly, and they’ll have the experience necessary to make everything look neat and clean to add more value to your home.
