Metal is finicky, particularly when exposed to the elements. In other words, you should always prime your metal garage door before laying down paint. Priming over old exterior paint is fine if the original paint is not cracked, chipped, and peeling. When that is the case, you need to scrape it off and sand first. Primer improves adhesion, seals stains, and provides a consistent base for the new paint. It also enhances the paint's durability and helps achieve a more uniform finish.

One gallon of paint covers about 400 square feet. Assuming that you have four equal walls that are 8 feet high, a 12x12 room will need one gallon of paint per coat. The number of coats you need will depend on the condition of the wall and whether you’re painting over an existing color or starting fresh.

You should use three coats of paint when applying to a heavily textured or porous surface. Sometimes painting a lighter color over a darker color requires three coats of paint or more to achieve full, even coverage. Trim or baseboards should also get three coats of paint.

While it may seem like a blind spot, if you don’t paint behind the toilet, the previous color will likely be visible once the rest of the bathroom has been repainted, especially if you’ve gone with a significantly different color palette. Additionally, not painting every part of the room at the same time means that you will have an older paint job behind your toilet that could be more susceptible to moisture damage.
