"Replaced leaking fireplace chimney cap with stainless steel, properly shaped to encourage rain water runoff. Also powder coated it via a sub contractor to match the color of the rest of my house trim. Good initial contact, good installation. Supplied many pictures of old rusty cap and also new cap as installed."

"Carlos was great! Always answered the phone when I tried to get in contact with him regarding time, price, etc. I called him out to originally do the concrete but to my surprise he told me he could do the whole project and for less than any other contractor out there. So in a total of 4 work days they had everything done and I’m so happy with my brand new front area and door. Thanks again Carlos!!"

"This was my second business transaction with Crossroads foundation repair. I was equally pleased this year with adjustment work that they did. Fabian and Honorio did a beautiful job and I could immediately notice the impact of their hard work. They took their time and made certain that I was absolutely pleased before they left."

"Very pleased with the result, amenable crew, delivered as promised, throughout the nerve wracking process. Our drainage control project was extensive, including building of beautiful retaining wall, reshaping steep gravel drive, buried French and connecting underground drains and garden fencing. Luke's attention to detail made this project shine!"

Customers say: Terrific value

"Last time I got a stamped concrete patio, I went with someone less experienced that only cost $10 per sq ft. This time I got 3 quotes from people rated highly on Angie’s List. So I was confident they would do a good job. I picked CD and Sons because their price was simple and reasonable. The other quotes were overpriced ($18 per sq ft) or they wanted to charge me extra for steps out of the house and site prep. CD and Sons also seemed the most willing to work with me to deliver exactly what I wanted. Dean and Chris did an excellent job. They worked really hard and were always very professional. One of the most important things to me was the quality of the stamp. Chris did an excellent job. I was really impressed with how much better it looked than my last patio. They also did a nice job texturing the sides of the steps. I wished they put a cover on the side of the house to protect it from the release. I will need to repaint some of the white trim. Had I asked, I have no doubt they would do it. They were always very accommodating of any request I made. I would definitely hire them again."

"They installed a steel beam in the crawlspace to support the foundation, and fully encapsulated my crawlspace. Free inspection of crawlspace, explained in detail the process, and the materials used. Came back a 2nd time to inspect the foundation I was concerned about. He explained what he could do. I hired him to do this too, because my brother was incapable, with no help. He and his team were professional and respectful, and stayed in that perimeter until the xwirk was completed. Yes, I would refer this company, and call them again if needed."

FAQs for masonry work projects in Bloomington, IN

Masonry uses units like bricks, cement blocks, and stone with mortar between them. Mortar is generally made of sand and a type of cement. Examples of masonry include the brick or stone on a house, chimney, or freestanding wall. Concrete is a mixture of water, sand, stone aggregate, and other materials, and is poured into forms or moldings. Types of concrete applications include driveways, garage and basement floors, and poured concrete walls in basements and crawl spaces.

The cost of masonry work varies widely depending on the type of masonry along with common cost factors like size, complexity, location, and season. Most exterior masonry work done in freezing temperatures tends to cost more because of the preparation and protection involved to keep the masonry from freezing before the mortar cures properly. The average price ranges per project or square foot for different types of masonry include:

  • Brick wall (fence, garden wall, etc.): $10–$45 per square foot

  • Natural stone wall: $40–$110 per square foot

  • Manufactured stone veneer: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Brick home exterior: $10–$30 per square foot

  • Brick siding: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone siding: $35–$50 per square foot

  • Brick step replacement: $20–$30 per square foot

  • Brick wall repair: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Chimney repairs: $160–$750 per project

  • Tuckpointing: $5–$25 per square foot

A mason lays brick or stone together, sometimes with mortar in between the bricks and stones, and sometimes without mortar, also called a dry-stack or surface bonding. Examples of work masons do include:

  • Brick, stone, or cement block houses and buildings

  • Freestanding stone or brick walls

  • Chimneys with wood-burning fireplaces

  • Cement block basement or crawl space walls

Masonry work tends to be more expensive because the materials can be costly, such as natural stone and brick. Masonry is also very labor intensive, typically making up 50% or more of the final project cost. In addition, quality masonry work requires years of training and experience, as with any skilled trade.

Two types of masonry are veneer masonry and solid masonry. Veneer masonry is thin brick or stone material attached to the face of a building. With veneer masonry, the walls support the weight of the masonry products rather than the masonry being built on a concrete footing. Solid masonry is a wall or other brick or stone structure built on a concrete footing, and the masonry supports itself.
