"I could not be more pleased with Chimney USA. I called for an estimate as my chimney was in need of some tuckpointing and I had to get it done ASAP as the closing on the sale of my house was quickly approaching. Upon the initial appraisal of the repairs, Ms. Garcia (the owner) realized that due to the age of the house, the repairs were going to be more extensive than initially thought and they might not be complete until after the closing date. After an exchange of email and telephone calls, the repairs were done before the closing date and beyond my expectation. The crew worked very hard to finish the job ASAP cleaned up the mess that was made as a result of their working. In all, I couldn't be happier or have asked for more! - thank you for a job well done."

"Miguel promptly returned my call, came to my house, and gave me an estimate. I accepted his estimate and he and Daniel came out the next day and completed the job to my satisfaction. Miguel is a very good brick mason and replaced the shoulders on both sides of my chimney."

"The chimney technicians were very professional and knowledgeable, and efficient. And the office manager, Toni, stayed in touch throughout the process, forwarding all necessary paperwork and pics in a timely manner/as requested. Chicago Chimney comes highly recommended by me and my condo association. ? Cheryl"

Chimney Inspection questions, answered by experts

Leaving a significant amount of snow on your roof can be risky. Most roofs are designed to handle about 20 pounds per square foot of snow, but exceeding this limit can lead to a roof collapse. A collapse can cause severe damage to your home and belongings and poses a physical danger to anyone inside. Furthermore, heavy snow accumulation increases the risk of ice dams, which can cause leaks and water damage to your roof, attic, and interior walls.

Generally, snow removal from a roof should occur once over six inches of snow accumulates, especially if you notice that ice dams have formed. Without ice dams, you can let the snow accumulation hit 12 inches before removing it. However, the amount of snow that is too much for your roof also depends on the sturdiness of your roof and the compactness of the snow. If your roof needs maintenance or has structural issues, it’s best not to let the snow accumulate too much for fear of collapsing.

To ensure optimal roof health, it’s a good idea to get an inspection once a year. However, certain factors may require more frequent checks. If your area experiences severe weather conditions such as hailstorms, high winds, or heavy snowfall, it is advisable to inspect your roof afterward. Older roofs are more susceptible to wear and tear, so if your roof is approaching its expected lifespan or has yet to be inspected in several years, it’s a good idea to schedule a roof inspection or estimate.

Common issues discovered during a chimney inspection or cleaning include creosote buildup, cracked liners, structural degeneration or masonry degradation, and obstructions such as blocked flues or animal nests. These issues are potential safety hazards that can lead to combustion problems or poor air quality if not addressed.

If your roof is 20 years old or more and repairs continually pop up, consider replacing the entire roof. Additionally, if an inspection finds that more than 20% of your roof is damaged, no matter the age, consider replacing the roof. In most cases, you should call a professional roofing company to replace the roof, unless you have extensive experience with roofing. Replacing a roof costs around $9,250 on average, but can range anywhere from $5,900 to $12,900, depending on the type of roof, the size of the roof, and your geographic location.
