"Atlas was the last of several companies to come and assess what was causing a crack in our family room wall and making our back door unusable because we couldn't open and close it without difficulty. We also had seepage in the basement. Other waterproofing and foundation companies had us digging up our basement and installing extra sump pumps and drain tiles. The foundation companies said we should install piers for prices ranging from $5,000 to $18,000. (We ended up hiring a plumbing company to replace a broken sewer pipe outside with a new one installed in the basement to address wall seepage, but a large wall crack remained that we needed to address.) Atlas was able to meet our hectic schedule and arrived on time to assess our problems. The engineer they sent out was the only one of the companies who listened carefully to what was happening to our house. He carefully measured the family room looking for slope. He carefully checked for other cracks in the remaining walls and ceiling in the family room to establish cracking patterns. He checked out our foundation in the family room, which is a slab over ground but also an empty space where stairs from the basement leading outdoors used to exist. He targeted that area because that's where the largest slope and cracks were located. He was able to report how much our family room was sinking after measuring the room. He said he believed because the foundation was constructed over an open space, moisture had been gathering for years and rotting the wood that was the base of the family room. I mentioned that white spots formed on the walls in winter, and he said that information most likely confirmed his theory. The engineer was at our house for about an hour. He asked for a few days to work up an estimate. We told him we were going on vacation, so he had more than two weeks to put the estimate together instead. As promised, shortly after we arrived home, the estimate arrived via email, along with drawings and a detailed explanation. The engineer returned to our home to go over everything with us, and we decided to sign a contract. Everything continued to move smoothly. Workers arrived promptly at an agreed upon date and time, and got to work immediately. They were walking the long way around to the work site, so I invited them to walk through the attached garage. They moved their materials into the garage, and when they left, they swept the garage cleaner than it was when they started. As they were about to leave, I pointed out that drywall repair was supposed to take place where the crack was in the wall. They checked the contract and acknowledged that was true and immediately went to the store to purchase the materials they needed. They apologized for the oversight and repaired the wall, again leaving the family room spotless. This work was completed before winter began, and I waited to write the review because I wanted to see if the white patches appeared on the wall again as the temperature dropped. The engineer said the white patches should not appear. So far, so good. We have had cold enough temperatures for the white patches to appear. Also, the back door works perfectly now. We also had them fill the crack in the basement wall since it had started to seep after 18 years of dormancy. They injected a product in the wall and covered the full-wall-length crack with another material. So far, nothing has leaked even during substantial rains. We feel Atlas is highly professional. The engineer is the only one who really listened to our house problems and spent time with us. We had multiple foundation and waterproofing companies come in, but Atlas was the only one who we felt wasn't trying to sell us a product over what was really necessary. Hopefully, we will not need their services again, but if we did, we would call immediately."

"Nick from 3D Concrete Design was extremely helpful! I was unsure whether a patio crack needed repair on full-on replacement. Nick recommended a simple repair, explained why in plain-language and provided a fair estimate in no time. From this interaction, I can tell that the folks at 3D Concrete Design are honest brokers and stand-people. I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them again in the future :-)"

"We hired this company to replace our crumbling front stairs, the curved front walkway, another set of stairs, rebuild the retaining wall in concrete, and install new railings. Fidel and Daniel were responsive and knowledgeable throughout the entire process. They took the time to answer all of our questions. The level of communication and customer service stood out to me and showed me how much they care about the quality of their work. The new concrete, retaining walls, and railings look amazing. We are getting compliments on it. Everything was completed professionally, and the finished product is functional and beautiful. I recommend this company for quality concrete work and excellent customer service."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

You should generally drill into the mortar joints when installing shutters on brick. Mortar is softer, which makes drilling easier and puts less strain on your tools. It also lowers the risk of cracking a brick—something that’s a lot harder to fix. Mortar holds fasteners well enough for standard shutters, and if you ever need to patch the holes later, it’s a much simpler job than dealing with damaged brick. Just keep in mind that if your mortar joints are too thin or the hardware calls for brick anchoring, you'll need to check the manufacturer’s recommendations and adjust accordingly.

Professionally done brick repointing can last 20 to 30 years, sometimes longer. However, the exact lifespan depends on several factors, including the quality of the mortar, the skill of the mason, and exposure to weather. If you live in an area with harsh weather or frequent freeze-thaw cycles, you may need to repoint more often. Repointing that is done as a DIY project may only last 10 to 15 years. It's time to repoint when you notice signs of mortar failure, such as crumbling or missing mortar, holes, or vines growing between the bricks. Regular inspections can help you catch these issues early.

In some cases, black stains on brick are caused by organic substances like algae and mold. However, it's more likely that the black spots you're noticing on your bricks come from carbon from vehicle exhaust or soot. Black stains can usually be removed by scrubbing the brick with a brush and masonry cleaner or power washing.

Yes, you can do German schmear on stone. You can account for the more textured and rough surface of stone by using a large paintbrush instead of a putty knife. A brush allows you to drag mortar across the stone to get it into all the cracks and crevices. However, a brush will cover more of the surface, so you may need a wet sponge to scrub excess mortar and expose more of your stone.

Limewash can be removed from brick, but the method of removal will depend on how long the limewash has been on the brick. If the limewash has fully dried—which happens after about five days—you’ll need to use a diluted muriatic acid mixture to remove it. If there are multiple coats of limewash, you may need to apply the acid mixture several times to fully remove it from the brick.
