"Can't say enough good things about our experience with AAA-1 Masonry & Tuckpointing. We had two holding walls with brick that was deteriorating. They power washed to identify which bricks needed to be removed and swapped out those bricks with new ones. In addition they replaced the capstones on the two walls with larger capstones to provide the walls more protection from the elements. Everything was sealed and completed flawlessly. The crew was experienced and professional. Since the work was done this summer, our walls don't even get wet from rain! We are so grateful for the expert repair but also the guidance that replacing the capstones would provide more of a long term solution. Highly recommend these guys for your masonry needs."

"We hired Edmar to rebuild our parapet on our brick multi-family house during the summer of 2020, and they did an outstanding job! The brickwork looks exceptional and I can tell they really pay attention to detail. Their proposal for the project was the most professional and detailed one we received, and if I had any questions they were very quick to respond. If we have any masonry needs in the future, we will definitely be giving Edmar a call. We also hired them to install new windows, and they did a great job with those as well - they installed them quickly and professionally."

"Outstanding experience with CAS Construction! Carlos and his crew did an awesome job renovating the back entrance of my home! Rotted brick pillar at head of the back entrance stairs was removed and a new perfect brick pillar was built and installed. They repaired all the imperfections in the surrounding concrete, sanded, power washed, and carefully applied the paint finish. The tuckpointing, caulking perimeter of the entire house, and the similar work in the other areas that needed repair and improvement, all done with minimal mess and no stress! From start to finish, Carlos was very knowledgeable and patient with all my questions. As was Iris, owner, CAS Construction. She was always available to provide answers promptly when I had additional questions. Without hesitation, highly recommend for excellent work, their dedication to customer satisfaction, and exceptional service!"

"Owner and crew were all extremely hardworking in removing and replacing top 20+ rows of chimney bricks and top mantle. They did a great job of cleaning the work site at the end of each day - very neat workers. Work was completed in a very timely manner as weather permitted. Would definitely recommend them for any similar work."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

The difference between river rock and landscaping rocks is size, smoothness, and use. River rocks are smooth and flat, as if polished by water, and come in diameters between 1 and 8 inches. Landscape rock can vary in size from small pea gravel installations to car-sized boulders. However, landscaping and river rocks are interchangeable in many situations. River rock is best for pathways, walkways, garden bed mulch, water features, and planting accents, while small landscape rocks can serve as a walkway base, gravel playground areas, and filler between pavers.

Some older brick material is extremely hard, making it tough to create a hole. Rather than using a typical wood drill bit, always use a masonry drill bit when drilling into brick. For extremely hard brick, using a power drill with a hammer function may give you better results. The drill bit will heat up as it goes into the extremely hard brick, so you may need to stop after a few minutes and allow the bit to cool before starting to drill again.

A mason lays brick or stone together, sometimes with mortar in between the bricks and stones, and sometimes without mortar, also called a dry-stack or surface bonding. Examples of work masons do include:

  • Brick, stone, or cement block houses and buildings

  • Freestanding stone or brick walls

  • Chimneys with wood-burning fireplaces

  • Cement block basement or crawl space walls

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.

No, you shouldn’t lay bricks directly on dirt. While it might seem like a shortcut, it leads to a patio that shifts, sinks, and becomes a maintenance headache. Dirt expands, contracts, and erodes—none of which mix well with long-term stability. To build something that lasts, excavate the topsoil, compact a layer of crushed gravel, and add a coarse sand-setting bed. This layered base gives your bricks proper support, allows drainage, and helps block weeds from creeping through. Cutting corners here just means you’ll spend more time—and money—repairing your brick patio later.
