"The sales rep took several water testsâ ¦ The sales rep took several water tests and showed me the results. She told me that I needed more than just a water softener. I also needed a system to address the rust and iron in my well water. I did not want to spend a fortune but the sales lady was pretty convincing. The price was good and the workmanship was excellent. My water is clean again ! Now I can tackle the original problem. My toilet has bad rust stains. I will either get it clean, or replace it. I could not do this until the water was fixed."

"I had a couple leaky outdoor water spigots that would have been an easy fix for me to do, but I couldn’t get the rusty bolt out to remove the handles so I could access and replace the washers, etc. I reached out to several plumbing companies and explained the task. They refused to come out to repair it and would only do a complete replacement for several hundred dollars per spigot. Ryan discussed the task with me and came out the next day to make the repairs. He was even able to “MacGyver” the part I had to make it work since it was a discontinued part, saving me the cost of replacing the entire apparatus and having a hole cut out of my drywall in my kitchen. The job was done really well for an incredibly fair price. I’m super grateful to now have an honest, affordable plumber on my speed dial for any future needs! I highly recommend Ryan. He does great work and is super kind. Thanks, Ryan!"

"Our well pump died and overnight we had no water for a house and for a bunch of horses. We contacted Artisan and they were able to get there the same afternoon. They diagnosed the problem and after discussion the fix options, they got right to work and replaced the pump, pipes and wiring. In and out in about 5 hours. Very professional and very polite. We were very impressed by the quality of the work and the friendliness of their tech (he's the owner). Definitely would use them again and recommend them to others!"

"Checked out our well pump, pressure, water filtration system and gave good suggestions and referral. Will follow up with a new water treatment filtration system. Pump is working well and well is not running dry. Had clogged hoses outside and that led us to believe the well was running dry or the pump wasn't working properly. Pressure in house was due to filtration system getting "gunked up" and in need of replacement. Brian was knowledgeable and helpful in appeasing our worst nightmare of drilling a new well."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

You can decide whether you need a water softener or water filter based on how your bathing or laundry experience is. If you notice issues like limescale buildup, dry skin, or stains on dishes—all telltale signs of hard water—you'd likely benefit from a water softener. However, if your main concern is over chemicals or bacteria in your tap water filter, and not just comfort, a filter is a better option.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.

While it depends on how complicated the unit and installation is, it takes two to four hours to install a water softener unit, on average. It might take longer if pipes need to be replaced. You should make sure the installation area is clear of any objects that might get in the way before you begin.

Yes, you can have both a water softener and a water filter. In fact, some manufacturers sell dual water softening and filtration systems that treat hard water and provide clean drinking water. If you’re unsure about what you need or want to discuss your options, reach out to a local water softener installation company.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.
