"Mike from Allegiance Water called. I explained what my problem was. He asked me a few questions and had me look at the unit to tell him what was happening. He asked if I had ever plugged the unit into a different wall plug. I hadn't, so he waited while I got and attached an extension cord to the water softener. When I plugged the cord into a different wall plug, the control pane lite up and I was able to program the softener. Further checking the wall plug showed the bottom plug was semi functional. The unit is working now. It appears the water softener is fine and I need to replace the wall plug. It will be replaced on Saturday. The Allegiance technician was honest. He could have taken another path and charge me for unneeded repairs. Allegiance Water Services phone number is written on the front page of my water softener maintenance manual for any future service it may need."

"

the leak was a drip at an elbow on the softener cold water feed. it had dripped a long time as it didn't show until the sheetrock was

saturated and mold started. I opened the ceiling and the wall and located how for it had run giving me a good look at the zigzag

placement of the water line when the softener was installed. The provider readily agreed to clean that up with the cost of a foot or two of pipe. I am completely happy

"Not good. The water leaks had caused black mold that had to be repaired. When repairs were completed 3 months later, the valves still leaked from the stem when turned on. It was past 60 days so I had to pay another $100 service fee to have the water leaks fixed. He tightened the packing and quoted $350 to replace the valves. Sheesh."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

To get utilities set up on a property, you first have to contact the local department of planning to determine whether your property is able to connect to public utilities. From there, you can work with a structural engineer and/or a building contractor to design the layout of utility lines on the property. The pros will need this information as they begin securing building permits before they can start adding lines.

If your property isn’t able to connect to public utilities, you’ll need to consider working with pros to develop a comfortable off-grid home that will meet your needs.

While not everyone can detect taste differences in high-calcium water, water that has a slightly metallic taste probably has too much calcium.

Whether you need a license or permit for water softener installation depends on your location. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, while others may only require a permit and an inspection. In some cases, both a permit and a licensed installer are necessary, and some areas have no requirements at all. Often, only certified plumbers and electricians are allowed to pull the necessary permits. To find out the specific regulations in your area, you can contact your local building department. Alternatively, a local water softener installer or plumber will be familiar with the requirements and can typically pull the permits for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use tools like Angi’s state licensing tool to verify an installer's license status.

Choosing involves understanding water hardness levels, household size, desired features, and consulting professionals experienced in suitable system types.

The main difference between a water softener and a water filter is what they remove from the water. A water softener is specifically designed to remove hard minerals, while a filter removes a wider range of contaminants above a certain size, such as bacteria and other impurities. If your primary goal is to remove minerals, a softener is the best choice. If you want to remove various contaminants for safety or taste, a filter is more suitable. Filters are also typically less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply's specific issues, you may need to install both systems for comprehensive treatment.
