"I recently moved and needed the gas fireplace checked out. The technician who came out was able to work on my Heatilator fireplace; when other fireplace service companies were unable to assist. He cleaned the glass, lit the pilot and educated me on proper use."

We are a full service HVAC company offering service and installation on furnaces, air conditioners, boilers, geothermal, and water heaters. We also perform premier duct cleaning services along with boiler water quality testing and treatment. Des Moines Comfort, Inc. has been the metro's leader in Geothermal and Radiant Floor Heating service and installation for over 13 years. We offer yearly service agreements and service the entire metro and surrounding areas.

"Last night, our furnace stopped working and we woke up to 56° indoor temp and dropping. To complicate matters, our household is currently sick with COVID and we were unable to have a technician enter our home because of this. After speaking with Jackie (the appointment secretary), I received a call back from the manager, George. George was very kind and explained why they couldn't send a technician out (completely understandable). He then continued to offer to walk me through things to check to identify and possibly solve the problem. I stayed on the phone with him while he walked me through trying a few different things, and by the end of the 25ish minute phone call I had a working furnace again. I am so beyond grateful for the above and beyond service George and his company supplied to me today. Because of him, we have a warm home to recover in. Thank you, George."

Gas Logs questions, answered by experts

Even if you invested in the cost of a gas shut-off valve for your oven and other appliances, it’s a good idea to add a seismic shut-off valve as an extra safety measure.

Gas shut-off valves for appliances are manual, meaning someone has to cut off the flow of gas. This leaves room for error, as you might not be home or might be too distracted to think about gas lines during an earthquake. An earthquake valve is automatic and will protect your home from gas-related disasters in the event of an earthquake.

The cost to convert a wood fireplace to gas ranges from $500 to $5,500 on average, with most people paying $3,000 for a conversion. Both wood and gas fireplaces have pros and cons—gas fireplaces are easier to clean and maintain, while fires in wood-burning fireplaces are especially warm and cozy.

If you sense a gas leak or are upgrading your appliances, it’s best to hire a gas engineer to disconnect the gas stove for you and conduct any other necessary inspections and repairs. While it is easy to disconnect the gas stove yourself, you may not be qualified to complete what needs to be done next. Gas is also harmful to the human body. Therefore, a trained professional is more suitable to handle any gas-related problems.

Any gas pipe can leak, especially if it’s old or isn’t properly maintained. However, even with a shovel, plastic pipes are more easily damaged by impact. That’s why it’s so important to have gas lines marked by the utility company before you begin digging for any reason. Some metal pipes, like black pipes, galvanized steel, and copper, aren’t as easily damaged by impact but can degrade over the years, leading to leaks.

Installation typically takes 1-2 days, and repairs can often be completed on the same day, depending on their complexity.
