We are a full service HVAC company offering service and installation on furnaces, air conditioners, boilers, geothermal, and water heaters. We also perform premier duct cleaning services along with boiler water quality testing and treatment. Des Moines Comfort, Inc. has been the metro's leader in Geothermal and Radiant Floor Heating service and installation for over 13 years. We offer yearly service agreements and service the entire metro and surrounding areas.

"Last night, our furnace stopped working and we woke up to 56° indoor temp and dropping. To complicate matters, our household is currently sick with COVID and we were unable to have a technician enter our home because of this. After speaking with Jackie (the appointment secretary), I received a call back from the manager, George. George was very kind and explained why they couldn't send a technician out (completely understandable). He then continued to offer to walk me through things to check to identify and possibly solve the problem. I stayed on the phone with him while he walked me through trying a few different things, and by the end of the 25ish minute phone call I had a working furnace again. Venting a gas water heater out of the roof is preferable in most cases. Heated exhaust gases naturally rise, so a vertical vent pipe is efficient. If you’re trying to vent through a pipe exiting a wall, the angle of the pipe may be more horizontal than vertical, making the venting system less effective. If you go through a wall, you may need to add a fan to ensure a successful expulsion of the gases outdoors.

Although a gas company supplies gas to homes, connecting gas appliances, like a dryer, is not their responsibility. The primary role of a gas company is to safely deliver gas to a property and maintain the gas supply lines up to a specific point, typically the gas meter or shut off valve. The task of installation is usually taken on by the homeowner or professional dryer installer. 

DIY installation is not recommended due to the complexities of gas line work and venting; professional installation ensures safety and compliance.

Some natural gas furnaces can be converted to propane with a conversion kit, but not all models are compatible. Consult a licensed HVAC pro to determine if conversion is possible and cost-effective for your system. The process involves changes to burner orifices and safety controls, and must be completed to code.

The best sealant for gas pipes is usually a pipe joint compound, or pipe dope. It creates a durable, leak-proof seal that is resistant to high pressure and vibrations, and it doesn’t break down like tape can. Yellow Teflon tape, or PTFE tape, can also be a good option and is a safe and reliable sealant for gas pipes when you or a pro apply it correctly.
