"hired JC Mechanical to replace 2 feet of damaged dryer vent. They quoted $3,283, saying it would take 8+ hours and require disassembling a large section of my HVAC system. Instead, the tech cut a 12” hole in my bathroom ceiling (not near the HVAC), installed $15 of flexible duct, and finished in under an hour. The HVAC was untouched, and the ceiling was left open and unrepaired—yet I was still charged the full amount. They no-showed the first appointment without calling. At the rescheduled visit, they arrived hours late with no notice and didn’t answer my calls. After the job, they refused to discuss the charge. I was told the owner would call me back—he never did. Then they blocked my number. When my wife called, they answered, made the same promise, and blocked her number too. This company was deceptive and unprofessional. I do not recommend them."

"I had to use this plumber through a home warranty service as he is one of their contractors. This is the most unprofessional plumber ever. I needed a washing machine hook-up box replaced. This guy took forever to get a hold of, then he didn’t show. When he did show he did not wear a mask in my house! Highly rude, and inconsiderate. Then he said he had to get approval from the home warranty people, that took weeks for him to do. This wasn’t the home warranty people being slow, it was him because I called them asking if they have received his paper work. A month and three weeks later I call him asking if he was going to be able to fix this. He said he would be out the next morning to do the work. Guess what? He didn’t show. No courtesy phone call either. He called 4 days later saying he would get me scheduled. Do not use this plumber, and if you use a home warranty service tell them you refuse to use his services. Luckily my home warranty services has allowed me to use my own plumber. Did I mention this is Ryan, the owner? What a joke. Not punctual Not courteous Did not wear a mask Unprofessional Zero stars"

An evaporator or swamp cooler is a common alternative for small spaces. These coolers blow moist air into a space to help cool it down. They are more affordable than misters and use much less water. However, coolers will not have the same cooling effect as misters, cannot help plants survive the heat, and only reach a small area.

There are three main types of heat pumps. An air-source heat pump system is the most common and has two parts—an indoor air handler unit and an outdoor heat pump unit. A ductless heat pump system functions similarly to an air-source heat pump system but doesn’t need ductwork to distribute the air. A geothermal heat pump system pulls heat from the ground to help heat your home.

You need to service an HVAC system about twice per year, with a service including an inspection and basic maintenance. It’s best to schedule maintenance in the spring (after the furnace has been running and before the AC kicks on) and in the fall (after the AC worked hard all summer and before winter’s first chill arrives). 

Regular HVAC services will keep the system working as efficiently as possible, saving you money on utilities and larger repairs. HVAC maintenance costs around $250 per visit, while bigger repairs from forgotten upkeep could cost thousands.

The most obvious downside is the high upfront cost of buying and installing one of these systems. Additionally, sometimes the system can take a longer time to heat than alternatives like a boiler. Also, if something goes wrong with the geothermal pump, repairs are often significantly more expensive than repairing traditional, above-ground heat pumps.
