The average life span of an HVAC system is 15 to 20 years. Even if your old air conditioner is still functional, it isn't as energy-efficient as a newer system (especially one with an Energy Star designation). Older HVAC systems aren't as efficient, and the 10-year mark is when you should start making full system replacement plans. Winterizing can still help you save money on energy costs and help prepare your AC for its work next year when you turn it back on. We suggest planning for at least some maintenance, even if winters are mild in your area.

The higher the BTU rating an air conditioner has, the more effective it can be at cooling your space. It will cool off your room faster in the short term. However, over the long term, if the unit has too many BTUs for the space, it can wear down the unit faster and shorten its life span.

Ideally, an AC system should never need more Freon (a popular refrigerant) because it circulates in a closed loop. However, refrigerant leaks are not uncommon and may occur gradually over 5 to 15 years. If your system has a leak, it will need to be topped up in a process known as an AC recharge. Signs of a refrigerant leak include weakened AC performance, increased humidity in your home, higher utility bills, and a hissing sound from the unit. The cost of an AC recharge will depend on the size and type of your AC unit, as well as the type of refrigerant it uses.

If refrigerant levels are low, it can cause the evaporator coil to freeze up. Low freon causes a drop in pressure, which will make the coil too cold and cause moisture to freeze on the coil. Your system may be low on refrigerant because of a leak. 

Make sure to have maintenance performed twice a year, and contact your local HVAC technician if you suspect your system has low freon levels.
