"New Era HVAC was amazing! I own a small business that has a very challenging environment to work around. Jared was extremely professional and minimized the disruption to our routine. We have large warehouse heaters. A few years ago we had one installed by another company. They left a huge mess, took 2 1/2 days to do the work and had no regard for disrupting our business. In contrast, when Jared replaced the second one he was done in one day, left the area clean and neat when he left, and was extremely accommodating with us. Your washing machine, dryer, oven, and stove contribute significantly to your electric bill as well. Lights, fans, and smaller electronics add up, but aren’t the biggest energy consumers. You can reduce your power usage by setting optimal temperatures on your thermostat and investing in energy-efficient appliances.

It’s not customary to tip HVAC technicians, and most professionals won’t expect it. However, it’s a nice way of showing your appreciation for the work they do, especially if they come out in inclement weather or on a weekend or holiday to fix an emergency issue if your heat or AC goes out in extreme temperatures. A good tip would be between 10% to 20% of the total bill, depending on how above and beyond the tech goes for your repair and on the total cost of your HVAC repair or service. For something like a routine tune-up or scheduled maintenance, tips aren’t expected.

The DOE is phasing out AC units with SEER ratings that fall below 14 or 15. The exact minimum rating depends on your region. In the northern United States, new ACs must have a minimum SEER rating of 14, though you can still buy and install older systems as long as they were compliant when they were manufactured. In the southern and southwestern United States, you cannot buy or install older air conditioners with lower SEER ratings. The minimum rating is between 14.5 and 15, depending on the power of the unit.

The size window AC you need depends on the BTU and the size of the room you’re cooling. For a room with 8-foot ceilings, look for about 20 BTU per square foot of the room. For example, a 12-by-12-foot room should have an air conditioner with 2,880 BTU. You can buy something slightly more powerful, but don’t overshoot the BTU for a small room, or you’ll waste energy and have higher bills.

If your AC unit isn’t cooling and you haven’t figured out why, there are a few good reasons to turn it off ASAP. The source of the issue, whether that be leaking refrigerant or a broken compressor, will worsen and cause more damage to the overall unit the longer the machine is allowed to run. When in doubt, shut it down until you or an AC pro can ensure everything is working properly.
