A 3-ton AC unit is probably too big for a home that’s 1,200 square feet. If you have a 1,200-square-foot home, you likely need a unit that’s somewhere around 1.9 and 2 tons. An AC unit that’s too large will be really inefficient and cost you a lot of extra money on your bills. 

Replacing an HVAC system does not always include new ductwork. The decision depends on the condition of your existing ducts. To reset your air conditioner, start by turning it off at the thermostat. Then, shut off power to the AC system at the circuit breaker. Some units have a dedicated "reset" button; if yours does, press and hold it for three to five seconds. If your air conditioner doesn't have a reset button, or if you are resetting it after a power outage, leave the circuit breaker off for at least 30 minutes to allow the system to reset itself. Afterward, turn the power back on at the breaker, turn on the AC from the thermostat, and set it to "cool" to test the system.

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

If your drain line is clogged, your AC might stop cooling, shut down, or refuse to turn on at all. Otherwise, you might see your AC leaking water, find standing water or water damage near the unit, or notice a musty smell coming out of your air conditioner or vents.
