"No one else would touch this job. Three other electricians said no way. Hackett sent a rotating crew of three for a whole historical house electrical upgrade ito code ncluding replacing all wiring, outlets, light fixtures, smoke alarms, and remodeling through additions over 100 years ...we added walls, took out walls, they moved wiring throughout and changed the electrical panels inside and out and ran electricity underground for a hot tub and for an ADU."

"The problem turned out to be a burned out small electric door switch. I believe the price was way too expensive for the service performed and the price of the door switch. What more can I say? It got done."

"What didn't this company do. Matt was awesome he built the roof on both my front porch and my back deck. He built a a door bookshelf which hides a clothes closet (I use for my yarn. He put up beams, layed my flooring, fixed my gutters, put trim up and installed my bathroom faucet. He is very dependable and through. I will be hiring him to remodel my master bathroom."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Durango’s climate presents challenges like heavy snow requiring reinforced outdoor wiring, and intense UV rays that degrade electrical components faster. Ground freezing in winter complicates trenching for underground cables, while summer thunderstorms increase the risk of power surges. The region’s large temperature swings and low humidity can also cause wiring insulation to crack, making climate-appropriate materials essential for lasting electrical work.

Helpful?

In Durango, flickering lights during windstorms, persistent tripped breakers, or a burning smell near your electrical panel—especially in winter—are warning signs. Moisture from melting snow can seep into outdoor outlets, and rapid aging of exterior wiring may signal UV or temperature damage. Addressing these issues quickly can prevent more extensive repairs, particularly given Durango’s harsh seasonal shifts.

Helpful?

If you notice exposed or cracked outdoor wiring, missing grounding rods, or evidence of unpermitted work, your Durango electrical system may need updating. Systems not designed for heavy heating loads, lack of surge protection, or improper installation of electrical panels for high-altitude conditions can all signal the need for a professional review. Frequent issues during weather changes also suggest previous work isn’t up to local standards.

Helpful?

To ensure a smooth electrical project in Durango, schedule inspections early due to limited rural availability, and plan work for late spring or early fall to avoid weather delays. Hire contractors experienced with high-altitude installations and familiar with local code requirements for snow loads and historic properties. Confirm your electrical panel and outdoor wiring are suited for Durango’s temperature swings and UV exposure.

Helpful?

In Durango, using extension cords as permanent solutions, plugging multiple space heaters into a single circuit, or leaving outdoor electrical panel covers open during snow or rain can all reduce system longevity. Failing to use surge protectors during summer thunderstorms, or running indoor-rated wiring to hot tubs or RV outlets, exposes your electrical system to weather and UV damage unique to Durango’s high-altitude climate.
