"I did not feel that his knowledge of the situation was correct. Having told him that the 1st floor was 900 square feet, I was shocked when his estimate of the area to receive insulation in the attic was several hundred square feet higher. Also, he was unaware of several credits available."

Small jobs welcome

"Jeff gave us a couple of different ways to insulate our daughter's rural home's crawl space and answered all our questions. They were professional and worked in a timely manner: insulated the concrete footings, foamed and insulated the sill plates, added a wind proof air duct, installed the vapor barrier, and rebuilt the old entry way door cover. Now our daughter should get the heat she is paying for and no worries about frozen pipes. I would highly recommend this company's services and would use them again if I had another insulation project."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, are the most energy-efficient and insulating window treatments. Their honeycomb structure is made of soft fabric that forms layered cell pockets. These pockets trap air, creating a thermal barrier that reduces heat loss in the winter and blocks heat gain in the summer. For even greater insulation, consider double- or triple-cell varieties. Side-tracked cellular shades, which seal the edges of the window frame, can further minimize air leaks and maximize energy efficiency.

When it comes to fiberglass insulation versus foam board, there are a few notable differences, both aesthetically and functionally. Fiberglass insulation is soft and flexible, meaning it can be squeezed into tight spaces more easily than foam board. Fiberglass insulation also has a higher R-value, making it a better pick for colder climates. However, foam board insulation can resist moisture and pest damage much better than fiberglass.

DIY installation is not recommended, as professionals ensure even distribution, proper sealing, and compliance with building codes.

The best way to reduce heat upstairs is to release it by opening a window. Hot air rises, and if you can create some airflow by opening a window upstairs and also one on a lower level, the hot air should be pushed out of the home. Remember that fans pointing out the window do a much better job of circulating air than fans pointing into the home.

You should not put fiberglass insulation in basements, since fiberglass is known to trap mold and mold is more commonly grown and produced in basements. You should also avoid placing insulation near water heaters, oil burners, or other hot appliances. For more information about the best and worst places to install insulation, consider hiring an insulation professional.
