"I am so happy to have had Dana Waller handle this project. He did a superior job for a fair price. He gave the highest level of install with all the special pipes & things. He is very knowledgable about what is necessary/needed & did it in a timely manner. He started the project on a Saturday, as we were rained out on Friday, found something missing and came back on a SUNDAY morning to finish the job rather than leave it for Monday. How considerate of him & the small crew that helped. Very professional, always told me what was going on & why. I wish I had known of Dana Waller before but I know of him now & I will be happy to call on him for any plumbing needs. He is a rare find & I recommend him without reservation."

"I had a problem at my vacation rental. John contacted me quickly when I posted my problem for quotes online. I had a failing septic. It was no longer draining. John came out and accessed the the situation and based on faulty drawings I supplied, he gave me an estimate for repair. I agreed to the figure. When he discovered that the drawings were wrong and he only had to dig up 5 feet (not 14) between the septic tank and the seep box he lowered his estimate. You can't ask for more honesty and fairness. He and his worker completed the job in less than 2 days. Hire him!"

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

The efficacy of a drain field depends on a wide variety of factors, though a well-maintained one can last as long as 40 or 50 years. Of the different types of septic tanks on the market, concrete and plastic tanks tend to last the longest—upwards of 40 years if they’re pumped regularly—while steel tanks have a tendency to rust over time and may need to be replaced after 15 or 20 years.

Over time, your septic tank can accumulate a buildup of sludge at the bottom of the tank. If left unpumped and uncleaned, the sludge will back up into your pipes and home, causing failure and extensive (and smelly) damage. Repairs to your septic system can be costly, which is why regular maintenance is required. It takes about 30 minutes to pump a septic tank that’s 1,250 gallons or less or 1 hour for larger varieties.

There are three layers of wastewater in a septic tank: scum (solid waste that floats to the top of the wastewater), liquid (the relatively clean liquid wastewater in between the two other layers), and sludge (solid waste that falls to the bottom of the wastewater). The buildup of sludge is one of the main reasons septic tanks need to be pumped. If the tank is more than 1/3 of the way full with a combination of sludge and scum, it’s time to call a pro for pumping.

Deciding between an engineered septic system and a conventional one depends on property size, soil quality, local regulations, and environmental factors. If your property has limited space, poor soil, or is close to sensitive environmental features, an engineered system may be required. Professional site evaluations, considering water usage, long-term plans, and budget constraints, can help determine the appropriate choice. Consulting with a septic system professional is crucial for ensuring compliance with regulations and selecting the best system for your property's unique needs.

Drain fields often include three to five trenches that are 18 to 24 inches deep. The pipes connecting the drain field to the septic tank will be placed between 12 and 18 inches deep, and the field as a whole will be about 100 feet long.
