"I contacted two tree trimming companies. Bailey was easy to schedule the appointments, the estimator was prompt and quickly provided his estimate for services, and their prices were reasonable especially when compared to the other company. I also appreciated that they had set prices for arborist reports. I would definitely use Bailey again."

"Highly recommend Acorn!!  Years ago, I used them when they were connected to Kemper and they always did great work. Then, a few years ago, I needed some basic pruning done and used someone who said they were an arborist and they ended up hacking my trees (pruned everything with a chain saw and left the trimmings). I joined Angie's list and looked up arborist and found Acorn. Jay came out to assess my needs and gave me an estimate. I booked the appt and his crew showed up promptly (even a little before schedule!) and there was an arborist on his team and 2 helpers. All very nice, knowledgeable men. Jay showed up to go over everything and he did the pruning of my nectarine.  My trees look amazing and healthy and I'm extremely happy with their work! They left everything very clean and even used the blower to make it cleaner than when they arrived. I seriously can't stop looking at the trees, because they way they pruned them is miles above what anyone else would have done. I can't thank you enough!!

"He removed 2 trees (crape myrtle and burch) and a couple of bushes. He did everything I asked him to do and they did a great job. There was a crew of 4 techs and they were at the home for a couple of hours. I asked them to save the wood and they stacked it up nicely for me."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

To maintain trees on a commercial property, perform regular pruning, monitor for diseases, and apply fertilization to promote healthy growth. It is also important to remove any hazardous branches to keep the trees healthy and prevent potential liability issues.

Generally, homeowners do not need permission to cut down a tree on their own private property, but there are several exceptions where a permit may be required. You might need a permit if the tree is particularly large, old, or a protected species, such as a heritage tree. Trees located near public property or power lines can also be subject to special rules. Additionally, many local governments and homeowners associations (HOAs) have regulations controlling which trees can be removed to manage an area's appearance or prevent the spread of invasive species. To avoid hefty fines, it is crucial to check with your local government and HOA to determine if a permit is needed before you begin.

You may be looking to identify maple trees to use for home improvement projects. In that case, you can tell hard maples by looking at their leaves. Leaves will have a U-shaped dip, or sinus, between the points, or lobes, of the leaves. Leaves of soft maples tend to have V-shaped sinuses.

If you already have the cut wood in front of you, look for a light, uniform color to identify hard maple wood and check for variations of red, gray, or brown streaks and an overall darker color in soft maple wood.

If you’re wondering whether you can plant a tree where the stump was removed, know that the soil conditions won’t be ideal, so you should avoid it. The soil beneath the previous tree will likely be depleted of nutrients, plus there may be roots left behind that will seriously hinder the growth of a new tree. Also, if you use salt or other chemical solutions to kill the stump, these can linger in the soil for months or even years and prevent healthy growth. It’s best to choose a different spot that’s at least three feet away for a new tree, or wait at least a year and thoroughly amend the soil before you plant.

It can be bad to leave a dead stump in the ground. A stump becomes a hefty piece of dead wood in time and eventually (especially with the help of rain) starts to rot. That makes it a locus point for diseases and pesky insects, as well as a bit of an eyesore. It’s best to remove a tree stump completely before it starts to decay, especially before it starts to fall apart. If the tree was removed because of disease, it’s even more important to fully remove the stump if possible.
