"Rick came over and addressed each and every issue that had been raised by the other contractor. He said none of these concerns interfered with the safety or integrity of our roof, and explained everything in a way that a layperson such as me would understand. In short, Rick said our roof is in great shape and doesn’t need to have anything done at all. He could have simply agreed with the other contractor and racked up more business for himself if he had wanted to do so; instead he didn’t charge me a cent for his time and effort although I would have been very happy to pay for the peace of mind he gave me. I’m happy to recommend RC Roofing for anyone who needs to get an honest expert opinion."

"I called Sequoia Roofing after all the rain had passed. Even though they were booked with appointments, Rudy came out only a few days after I called since we will be leaving town soon (this is our vacation home). My husband and I were extremely impressed with Rudy Turner, when he came out. He really knows roofing, diagnosed the problem, and saved us money by not selling a roof that we don't need. When we do need a roof, we will call him. Thank you Rudy!"

"I dealt with Leon De Anda for my roof work. Leon was honest and professional and very informative about what could be done with my roof. He offered me a few options and also asked me if there were anything specific I wanted done. I basically described what I wanted and he curtailed his bid to what I was looking for at the best price. I liked the fact that he was honest and straight forward without playing any games or try and screw me over. In the end, I decided to get a whole new roof, down to even getting all new plywood. The men who came to work on the roof were competent and professional. They went to great lengths to only bother me when it was necessary. Everyday they made a mess but at the end of the day they would always clean it up. I thought they were very professional. Leon was not at my house everyday but he was always just a phone call away. He was very accessible. Once the work was completed, Leon and myself walked around the property and inspected the work. He made sure that I was completed satisfied before everything was finalized. Protecta Roofing made a big impression on me based on the way they started and completed this job. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to get some roof work done or even some general contracting work done."

"After having investigated five companies bidding on my roofing project, there was one clear choice, Cal Roof. The bid was made without delay and was the most professional and complete of any I had encountered. Doug had obviously done his homework and came prepared to our first meeting. After discussing what I was looking for, I received excellent documentation indicating the full scope of work being provided, and full disclosure in writing of the warranty and materials used. There was no long winded sales presentation or up-sell. Everything was very straight forward and transparent. The thoroughness of his proposal was impressive, and he gave me a very competitive price. I was pleased with our communications from our first meeting until the day we wrapped things up. I have no hesitation in giving a full recommendation of Cal Roof."

"I had an excellent experience with this roofing company from start to finish. The team was professional, knowledgeable, and communicated clearly throughout the entire process. They arrived on time, completed the work as scheduled, and left the property clean when they were finished. The quality of the workmanship exceeded my expectations, and the new roof looks fantastic. It’s hard to find contractors who are this reliable and detail-oriented. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for roofing services and would not hesitate to use them again in the future."

"Leon from Crown Roofing was terrific to work with on my roof repair project. It was a relatively small tuneup and minor repair, but Leon took it just as seriously as a complete roof replacement. Great response, terrific communication and efficient completion of the work. Also, he did not try to oversell me on the project. He ultimately gave me two different ways to address the repair. I would use Crown Roofing again and I would recommend them to my friends."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The proper specifications for furring strips can vary, so you should always consult the roofing manufacturer's guidelines or your roofer. However, general recommendations are as follows:

  • Thickness: Furring strips are typically 1 to 1-1/2 inches thick, meaning standard 1-by or 2-by lumber works well. In areas with extreme winds, a thinner strip may be preferred to limit how much air can get under the roof and cause uplift. A thicker strip can add slightly more insulation but will also increase installation costs.

  • Spacing: The recommended spacing for furring strips is between 12 and 24 inches apart on center. Proper spacing is crucial for ensuring good airflow, adequate drainage, noise reduction, and better energy efficiency. The ideal spacing can depend on the roof's pitch and the specific type of metal roofing being installed.

Metal roofs do not inherently leak more than shingle roofs; when properly installed, they are generally less likely to leak. Asphalt shingle roofs are more susceptible to leaks due to factors like wind uplift, damage from extreme weather, moss growth, and ice dams. Over time, asphalt shingles also lose their protective grit, which reduces their waterproofing capabilities. In contrast, metal is a more resilient material that stands up better to heavy precipitation and high winds. However, metal roofs can develop leaks if they are poorly installed, have improperly sealed fasteners, or experience issues from thermal expansion. For this reason, professional installation and regular maintenance are crucial to ensure a metal roof's longevity and superior protection against leaks.

A cool roof can be worth it in the right climate. Cool roofs are excellent at reflecting solar heat away from your home, so if you live in a warm or hot climate, they can be a great roofing choice. Some cool roofing materials are even eligible for tax credits. However, they cost more than traditional roofing and don’t retain heat as well as traditional roofing, so they’re not ideal if you live in a cold climate.

Roof sheathing can buckle from moisture damage, too much weight from roofing materials, or too much space in between rafters without thicker sheathing to compensate for the added distance. Bucking roof sheathing is a serious problem that can lead to a collapsed roof, so have a qualified roofer near you come to identify the problem as soon as possible.

Clay tile roofing is more susceptible to damage from impact than something like a metal roof or even asphalt shingles, so they aren’t ideal in areas that see frequent windblown debris or hail. Clay tile roofs are also an average of $8,000 more expensive than asphalt shingle roofs, so up-front cost is an important consideration to make before committing.
