"We had our roof, skylights, soffits, rakes, fascia, and gutters replaced and are extremely satisfied. From the sales process with Chad M, to the quality control perfection by Chad G, to the absolute superb attention to detail by Jesse and the soffit team, every step was extraordinary. Top-notch communications. Top-notch attention to detail. They treated my home as if it were their own and that is very rare by contractors today. Too many are quick to move on to the next job. These guys know their craft, and know how to work with and treat a customer with courtesy and respect. Thank you All Craft for being such a great option in the Rochester area. I highly recommend All Craft Exteriors!"

"An inspection (by a third party) of my fireplace and chimney revealed that they were broken front to back and top to bottom. Unrepairable. Hired Amadore. They came quickly, did the demo on the fireplace/chimney. This involved a lot of work. The original install involved brick, and two different types of concrete blocks. The chimney had been leaking rainwater, so there was rot also. In two weeks they demo'd it. Replaced sheathing and shingles on the roof, rotten trusses and studs, rotten bottom and top plates. Brought all up to code. Replaced the back deck, beyond code. The jointing on the deck was superb, made me think of a Mississippi Steamer deck. The pillars brought to mind a Antebellum Southern Mansion and an Old West Fortress. Excellent! My neighbors complimented them on little disruption there was during the work. And they adjusted their hours to fit my work schedule. I have to be in Chicago (300 miles) every morning at 0700, thus I go to bed between 3, and 4pm. Wonderful"

"I’m absolutely thrilled with the work done by the roofing contractor! They completed my entire roof project with exceptional professionalism and attention to detail. They also expertly installed a skylight and patched the surrounding drywall, finishing it seamlessly to match the existing texture. On top of that, they provided a convenient dumpster service, making the entire process smooth and hassle-free. I highly recommend their services!"

"Erie Home Basement Solutions was a pleasure to work with. Everyone was on time, and always polite and courteous throughout this process. This is extremely hard work and they continued to always have a smile on their face and answer any questions I had. They worked diligently to complete the project on time and fulfilled all aspects of the contract. Actually, they went above and beyond to make sure I was pleased with their service, which is unusual in todayâ s work culture. I would highly recommend this company for your basement waterproofing needs."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

The most common slope range for roofs on houses in snowy areas is between 4/12 and 6/12, or 50%. A roof with a slope of less than 10%, or roughly a 2/12 pitch, won’t be effective at shedding snow. However, roofs that are too steep can allow large amounts of snow to build up and fall all at once, creating a hazard for those on the ground.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, wood shakes and wood shingles have notable differences, primarily in their manufacturing and appearance. Wood shingles are machine-cut on both sides, resulting in a smooth, thin, and uniform product. In contrast, wood shakes are typically hand-split or sawed on only one side, giving them a more textured, natural, and rustic appearance. Due to these manufacturing differences, shakes are generally thicker, heavier, and less uniform than shingles. They are also more expensive. Homeowners seeking a more rustic aesthetic often choose shakes, while those preferring a more uniform look may opt for shingles. Both are installed in an overlapping pattern to create a durable, weather-resistant roof.

Flat roofs are cost-effective, offer usable space, and are easy to maintain. Foam and single-ply materials provide excellent insulation and durability.

Rain shouldn’t come in through your ridge vents unless your vents are damaged or the rain is accompanied by very high winds. Most ridge vents use flashing or baffling to keep out rain, snow, and debris. If your ridge vent isn’t baffled, rain is more likely to enter your attic, so ridge vents with baffles are a better choice in areas with regular rainfall.

You can walk on a TPO roof, but you should only do so when necessary and wear footwear that’s less likely to puncture the surface. If you anticipate needing to frequently walk on your TPO roof, reinforce walkways to protect against punctures. TPO roofing can also be slippery, so in most cases, you’ll want to leave walking on it to the pros.
