"When we built our home in 1991 we figured we?d remodel the master bath within 5 years.  We put in a cheaper double cabinet (oak, of course), 4x4 tile on the walls, Kohler?s smallest corner shower, ugly vinyl  flooring and, oh joy, Hollywood lights on both sides of the mirrors.  We actually remodeled in 2014. From 1994 to 2014 we planned. What I really mean is that we argued.  Hubby wanted cutting edge. I wanted traditional.  He wanted a bigger shower.  I wanted a bigger bathtub.  And then the whole messy pot of ideas got pushed to the back burner.

Enter Kristi. She had already done a large shed for us with an attached porch so we knew we liked her attention to detail and respect for the style of the house. (In fact, our home was on a tour and people kept asking if the shed was the ?servant?s quarters.?).

First she sat on the potty (the top was closed!) and listened to us talk with one ear while her other was listening to the ideas already spinning in her head.  ?Yeah, well that wall?s gotta go.?  Converted a big area under the stairs into a small useable area and bought us a feeling of spaciousness. Cool.

She carved out a new shower area for the hubby and I found a "Victoria and Albert? tub that is bigger than the old one but takes up less room.  We decided on that 1930s black and white look with console sinks and old-fashion-y chrome hardware.  My fave part is the push button light switches with the mother of pearl buttons.

A woman is only as good as the men she hires and Kristi?s subs are top-notch.  The tile guy ? wow. Home Depot presented its usual nightmare, even accusing him of having picked up the order before and trying to get more for free!  He ended up pretty much pulling apart the tile sheets so he could create the greek key pattern. The floor heating is marvelous as well.

The plumber, Bob the P, was very good.  At one point he called me upstairs as he?d cut through a low voltage wire under the bathtub.  Turns out it was for the doorbell ? a very odd place to find it!  You would?ve thought he cut the cord to granny?s respirator!

Needless to say, it was fixed without comment or delay. Almost a year later we noticed a small leak under one of the sinks.  He stopped over within a day or two and it turned out to be a manufacturing defect. We had to force him to write out an invoice.

We?ve worked with some contractors who are very protective of their subs ? mostly so they can pick up a percentage of their work.  Kristi will give you their phone numbers and tell you to tell them she said to call.  Her philosophy is apparently if you?ve got a little job that she wasn?t involved in, why not let her customers get the best.

I'd write more but a nice bubble bath seems more in order..."

"Jim and his crew, including the sub-contractors, did an amazing job on our project to finish off some of our basement. We added a bathroom, bedroom, and family room. The quote was thorough and accurate. The communication was responsive. The workmanship was second to none. I highly recommend working with Jim. You won't be disappointed."

"Stone was a very respectful businessman and took as much time as needed to complete the project to perfection. Had front door concrete steps removed and replaced concrete steps in two days. I would encourage anyone needing concrete or masonry work to hire Aloha Outdoor Services."

"We had a very positive experience working with the team at Redefined Remodel + Construction LLC. When we first contacted Mr. Meldman about our sad-looking basement, he replied quickly and came to the house for a walk-through and discussion about project ideas. Within a week he presented a precise and detailed contract that met our needs. And throughout the project, Mr. Meldman promptly responded to all our communications and did more than just answer our questions; he explained those answers. We felt confident with the skilled workers who entered our home and were always treated courteously and with respect. The results of our project are exactly as discussed and look great! We would definitely contact Redefined Remodel + Construction LLC again for future projects, and recommend their services."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

It is common for a contractor to ask for a down payment before starting a project, especially for jobs that require purchasing materials and equipment or hiring a crew. The deposit amount can range from 10% to 50% of the total job cost. While a request for up to 50% is not unusual, a contractor should not ask for more than that, and you should never pay for a project in full before the work has begun. To protect yourself, always discuss payment terms before starting and have a written contract that outlines the project timeline and expectations. Additionally, be sure to hire reputable contractors and check their licensing and insurance before the project begins.

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Replacing carpet or other flooring

  • Adding heating and cooling

  • Adjusting or adding walls and doors

  • Altering or adding plumbing elements

If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.

Key trends include home gyms, theatre rooms, additional rooms (bedroom/office), and more, with personalized styles reflecting individual preferences.

Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:

  • Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel

  • Installing light fixtures yourself

  • Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones

  • Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary
