"Our gas fireplace (original to the home in 2001) started having a squealing noise when the blower was turned on.  For a while, it only lasted a couple minutes, but then it started happening all the time - making the fireplace unusable!  So I researched on YELP, looking for a company that would service fireplace inserts.  The first place I called had a ton of great reviews, but they couldn't get out to the house for a MONTH!!  Way too long to be without our fireplace!!  So next I tried Hamblen & Sons. 
Tim Hamblen is the father - and handled my questions over the phone.  He is very a chatty guy - lots of humor...maybe a touch more joking than would be ideal - but he was a nice guy.  Due to the age of the blower unit, it would be a special order.  He provided a rough quote (based on another order he placed recently) of $450 or so and we decided to move forward with the process.  He called a week later (or so) and scheduled to come out the next day to install. 
The Hamblen son, Drew, was the installer - and was super professional and personable.  He was great with my 1 1/2 yr old son watching his every move.  He installed the new blower and proceeded to clean the glass (we could never get it clean) and gave me the name of the cleaner he uses (I have since ordered it on Amazon!).  He also cleaned and tested the rest of the fireplace to make sure everything else was functioning correctly. 
He gave me the final bill and it was under $400!!  What a nice surprise!!  We were prepared for close to $500 and it actually came to a little over $375 (including tax, etc).  He also asked about our water heater as the cost will be going up soon - do to new "features" - and he wanted to make sure if we needed one, we got on it soon to avoid the price increase.
I really liked working with this company and would recommend for sure.  We didn't really shop around much - time to be on the phone is hard to come by with little ones running around.  But we felt very comfortable paying what we did for the value we get out of our fireplace in not needing to have the entire house heated!!

"Nick and the crew are a hard working group of guys. I initially met Nick when he bid the furnace job at my house while we were remodeling it and not only did I like Nick as a individual I also liked his bid. Not only did Nick's bid come in thousands less than his competitor's, he went above and beyond the scope of work needed to do the job and do it right. During this time my boss was talking about doing some better heating in our showroom and in our shop, once again Nick's bid was less than his competitor's and he and the crew, again, did a wonderful job. A few weeks later my fiance's dad called me with problems on his decade old furnace, of course the only person that instantly came to mind was Nick, I called him and he had someone out there immediately. After finding numerous problems with the furnace and the poor condition it was in the decision was made to install a new furnace. Nick promptly got me a bid over the weekend which I then forwarded on to my soon to be father-in-law, he decided on the package that he wanted to go with on Monday and Nick was there Tuesday installing the new furnace, even with his extremely busy schedule. The following evening my FIL called me to tell me how happy he was with the work and he as well would NOT recommend anyone else for heating. There is no doubt in my mind that Nick and his guys will be my number one choice for heating and air conditioning, they go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure their customers are happy and comfortable!"

He examined everything very thoroughly and replaced my damper system so that it is easy to use and closes off the incoming air completely when I choose. I also had a stainless steel piece placed in the back of the fireplace which reflects the heat into the rom when I make a fire. "We have a new construction home that we "finished" in July of last year.  We had numerous problems during the build, so to save some money on overrunning budgets my husband and I decided to install the stone veneer ourselves both inside and outside the house.  This included all the exterior wainscoting, four columns on the porch, and two floor-to-ceiling interior fireplaces.  We started off well, but after finishing over half the work we (quite frankly) ran out of steam!  With four large exterior columns and a very tall fireplace (15 feet) remaining, we called Jake at Stern's Masonry in January based on the excellent recommendations here on Angie's List.

Jake called back very quickly and came out to provide a quote within a few days.  He was very professional, recognized how much work we had already done, and was conscientious to the fact that the new work needed to blend with the old (ours...not so professional!) as much as possible.  We received his quote back with 24 hours, and while we felt the quoted price was reasonable, we unfortunately couldn't afford to get started until we'd saved up for a bit.  Jake was very understanding and said "give me a call when you're ready".  So in mid-March, we were happy to call him back for the job.  Although the company was working other jobs, they fit us in and his installer (Tony) got started a couple of weeks later.

Over the course of about two weeks, Tony and Jake smoothed the basecoats we had started, installed the veneer on four outside columns, put on stone caps to the top of the columns, demo'd our "half job" on the 15-foot tall interior fireplace, and reinstalled the veneer and hearthstones on the fireplace.  They had the skills (and scaffolding!) to get it done well.  Throughout the work, both Tony and Jake were respectful to our house and cleaned up after each day of work to limit the impact.  Jake also made sure that the work we had already done looked good before he was finished.  He cleaned the exterior veneer we had already installed to make sure the colors matched up, did some professional patching around cutouts like the hose bib and exterior outlets that we weren't that skilled to do, "straightened" a few of our more problem stones, touched up the paint on our firebox when it was needed, and even used a little leftover mortar to patch some holes he noticed in our driveway (the result of one of our many "problems" during build).

So here's our recommendation:  call Stern's.  And if you need to save up the money first, do it!  Worth. Every. Penny.

"So awesome! It would be hard to express the level of enthusiasm I have for how this turned out. I have always wanted a fire pit, but this just looks so beautiful and perfect that my expectations were exceeded. There is a lot of work that goes into this--the 2 boulders we brought in for seating weigh about 5000 pounds, so moving around those kinds of materials is a big job! Then there are just so many other steps to doing this right that you are not aware of ahead of time. They were quite thorough and did not take any shortcuts, and also integrated my input about things at every step of the way.
