"Mr. Ortiz and his crew installed a 300 square foot deck for us, and the work is great. He explained everything, gave options, tips about taking care of the deck, and put in the extra effort to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. If given the opportunity to hire Ortiz Wood Carpentry again, we would gladly request his proposal again."

"Vasilly had to change the day/time for the job he bid, but he called & rescheduled agreeing to come on a SUNDAY morning. He made it that day; on time - a pleasant surprise. It took him about 3 & 1/2 hours to build & mount the railing in the garage. This single railing installed in our garage looks great (nicer than we'd anticipated & will serve us very well (safety assistance after surgery required this addition). We were concerned it might look really 'weird' but the materials Vasilly chose along with his skillful installation has totally eliminated that concern. Total construction & materials: $400."

Customers say: Terrific value

"Alexsei came through when we were really in a pinch. We were having new florring installed and found disaster under the carpet. Alexsei was fast to respond to my call, came out immediately to assess the job and finished two difficult projects in one week! We are very happy with the quality of work and speediness of completion. I'd recommend Patron General Construction to anyone needing carpentry work done."

"The guy who showed up was not able to complete the work. He said the estimate was not done correctly and there was not enough time and he needed help. We agreed on a compromise to just have him paint the porch. He was nice, but the work I hired the firm to do was not completed."

"Dave took 2 bedrooms and a small bathroom and created al master suite. He enlarged and upgraded the bathroom and made one elegant bedroom. Dave is a perfectionist and the work reflects it. He is also very creative and loves his job. We couldn't ask for more: The remodel is beautiful, artistic and practical, the price reasonable, and he and his crew were a delight to have around--polite, respectful and fun. Millennium Specialties exceeded our expectations and more!"

"Very satisfied with the carpentry work that was done. Gus installed a patio screen door and bifold closet doors in my bedroom. Gus was pleasant and was on time for his appointment. I definitely would hire him again and would recommend him to anyone."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most load-bearing walls are exterior, though they can also be interior.

Yes, using certified lumber and engineered wood products for reduced environmental impact.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.
