"Spoke with Chris about the issues we were having with our water. He provided an abundance of information and options. He scheduled for the install the very next day and we couldn’t be happier with the work and professionalism of Paul, the technician assigned to the job. We would recommend them to anyone when asked. Thanks again Chris."

"Top notch service, quick delivery and installation, and amazing results. I thought my water quality was good until I saw the test results. I had a professionally installed water system for the last ten years so I figured I was good to go, but I wasnâ t. Bobby responded quickly and showed genuine concern for my family and how my water quality could affect them. He recommended a system designed to correct the problem and had it up and running in less than a week. I was very happy with my experience then after having experienced what a proper system could do I was blown away! Water is something we take for granted and if itâ s clear we assume itâ s good, donâ t make the mistake I did. Call Bobby and have your system checked!"

"Greg and his assistant were very professional, explained all options for repairing our plumbing. They replaced our pipes in the kitchen and washer drain in our garage. They installed new kitchen and bathroom faucets. I will always hire him to fix any plumbing problems or installations that I need done. He cleaned all areas and removed and disposed the damaged pipes etc. I highly recommend him and his company."

"Lee was great! He realized I had no water working after a jack-leg repair by another "plumber", so he came back at 8:00 pm and worked until 2:00 am to get everything fixed. I definitely recommend Russell's!"

"The Customer Service was top notch! This company offered financing with no interest if paid off in a certain specified time frame. This was very helpful for us. My husband hasn't been drinking much water because it was awful tasting and had a bad odor. He is now running to the kitchen and drinking all day long. We see wonderful things happening since the system was installed. Our skin is so soft, hair very manageable, dishes are clean to include pots and pans, and our food taste very different. We are really pleased with this system so far. Would recommend it to anyone who wants to drink good water. We feel our health is going to improve over time. Thanks to Superior."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Hard water doesn’t hurt, but it might feel more abrasive, especially if you have sensitive skin. It’s also about how your skin feels after bathing. You might feel as though you have a sticky film over your body because you do—it’s all that soapy residue left behind because the hard water can’t rinse it off completely.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

Installing a water softener could help reduce calcium buildup in your pool if your pool has high calcium hardness as a result of hard drinking water in your home. Pool softeners work by exchanging calcium and magnesium for sodium, so if you use softened water to top off your pool, it may help keep calcium hardness from rising over time. However, it won’t lower the calcium hardness of the water already in your pool and isn’t a practical way to control pool calcium levels. The average water softener installation cost is between $200 and $6,000.

Most of the U.S. has hard water, especially across portions of the West and Midwest. The areas with the hardest water include parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Ohio, and New York. You’ll find soft water in parts of New England, the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.
