"While they could not service our gas fireplace pilot light, the customer service representative who called provided a lot of information on their semi-annual HVAC service packages and sent quotations for two levels of service for our gas heating system and electric A/C system, one more comprehensive than the other which included emergency plumbing and electrical services, as needed."

"We had a brand new microwave and it kept shorting out. They fixed the electrical outlet and changed the fuse in the microwave. Took them about an hour to do the repairs and I haven't had anymore problems. They are very good at their job and knowledgeable."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

They can vary—a lot. For example, while the EU continues to move toward broader standardization, many different types of outlets still exist from country to country. Some local standards cared about polarization, and some didn’t. It’s similar to other countries around the world.

Generally, you’re less likely to find polarized outlets outside North America. However, alternative plugs and outlets often incorporate precautions so that accidentally touching live prongs on a plug is hard or impossible. You may also find interesting regulations overseas that limit the use of outlets in bathrooms or near sinks to decrease the chance of shock.

No, you should always use proper electrical wire caps to safely cap off electrical wires. Electrical tape isn’t as durable as electrical caps and can deteriorate and separate over time, exposing the live wires. The only way to use electrical tape for this project is to wrap it around the caps themselves to reinforce them and create an even stronger connection, preventing an electrical emergency.

No, a ceiling fan doesn’t have to be wired to a switch, but it’s often more convenient. You can use the included pull chain if your ceiling isn’t too high or install a remote module later, as they are a cheap, easy-to-install option that’ll let you control both the fan and light fixture.

240V is the standard for more demanding appliances in the United States, whereas 220V is more common elsewhere. The voltage isn’t very different in any practical sense. The United States is a newer country compared to many other regions in the world with a faster adoption of new electrical needs. Appliances in the United States are often bigger than other parts of the world.

Choosing a unit with higher BTUs can use more electricity if the BTUs are more than what’s necessary for your room size. However, choosing an AC with BTUs that match the size of your room or house, your unit will cool your space efficiently. On the flip side, choosing a system with not enough BTUs can cause the system to work harder to try to cool the space, leading to more electricity consumption and higher energy bills.
