"We set an initial time for an estimate. Mike rescheduled due to being held up by a kitchen remodel. He rescheduled 3 times after that, and though we did have some bad weather, I was able to get around after a day. Came by for an estimate Sat Jan 13. We went through in detail the work to be done. Got an text from Mike Friday Jan 19th that they were “running behind” on quotes, one would one be coming “over the weekend”. Another text Monday the 22nd that they were having internet issues and it would be resent on the 25th. I have to assume there is a printer and /or mail issue as well. As of the 26th, close to a month after my initial contact, we still do not have a quote, much less a potential start date. Based on this experience just trying to get a quote, will not be using this contractor, regardless of reviews. Can’t comment on quality of work or price since we never got a quote, so I could only grade a C on those."

"My project went well. I’m a General Contractor and use Custom Contracting’s services often. This project included re doing all of the cornice and siding on a two story home. From tear off to install, everything went very smoothly. Custom has great field management and they are quick to address any issues that typically arise when a job is in production. They are very knowledgeable and helpful in keeping me up to date with what’s going on in their area of expertise and that helps me greatly as a GC. They conduct their business in a professional manner and you can trust that you’ll be in good hands when you choose Custom Contracting for your roofing and siding project."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

The best way to calculate framing costs is by basing your costs on the square footage of your home. On average, framing your home could cost anywhere between $7 and $16 per square foot.

To ensure you don’t go over budget, base your estimates on the higher end of the price range. If you know you’re going to use high-end materials or require a custom or complex build, you might even want to tack on an additional 5% of your budget.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

Begin by analyzing the blueprints and gathering the proper materials before framing a house. With the prep stages behind you, begin by framing the floor of a house on the newly set foundation. Exterior and interior walls come next, along with rough openings for doors and windows. Contractors will then add ceiling and roof rafters to finish things off.

By careful planning and reinforcement to maintain structural integrity.
