"I had the best experience with Capitol Locksmith. Erwin was professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and on time. He answered all of my questions and did exactly what he said he would do. Outstanding customer service. I highly recommend!"
"This was an intricate work area, behind Dominion power meters that required advanced planning, coordination and a timeline of one day. Gary came out during the quotation process and was knowledgeable, understanding, and very prompt with his estimate. His great reviews here on Angie's list are very warranted, I felt very comfortable awarding him the job and am very glad I did. He and his crew (Ervin and Franz) were great, very nice and very professional, a real pleasure to work with. After watching too many episodes of Holmes on Holmes I can be a bit of an overkiller when it comes to making something right and they were on the same page, and very patient with me. If you want it done right Gary is your guy. Always get multiple quotes for a job but make sure Gary and Reo-Servicepro are at the top of your call list. Thanks Gary, Ervin, and Franz! "
"Beyond my expectations! The old door was condensing inside and out, we knew there would be extensive damage to the wood framing and floor area beneath. It was worse than I expected. Mike installed the new door, created a way for our pet door to fit while still being able to LOCK the slider! Over three days - the tear out, purchasing of many materials, repairing the frame, installing the new door, repainting/restoring the interior and exterior to BETTER than they previously appeared, and rigging that new and improved pet door - he worked diligently. I have never had a workman that was so neat! Cleaning up debris, bagging trash, maintaining the work area organized and safe. I have already recommended him to friends, and they have all said how great he was! I have many other projects planned, and will not hesitate to call Home Remedies again."
"Jim the Handyman is fantastic! We recently had several small repairs done (we waited to bundle them into one job to make it easier for everyone). The crew they sent out did all of them in less time than I expected, and for less than half of what I expected to pay. The work was top notch (something we've seen in the other things they've done for us) and we are very pleased. In fact, I have to call them to schedule some other work. Jim the Handyman should be your go-to provider for anything you need done."
"Ron was great. Very responsive and honest. Answered all my questions and was extremely patient with me. He rekeyed all my locks after moving into my new home which saved me a tons of money because I thought I was having to replace all the locks. Now I have key for every door. Would definitely recommend to anyone."
"Great people to do work with! On time, free estimates and very professional. Whatever you need done around your home, call these guys first and save yourself a lot of time/aggravation."
"He did work in my patio, painted inside house and also completed a bathroom in my basement. He is very reliable and dependable. I rarely meet a person who is honest and trustworthy. I would recommend Johnny."
The cost-effectiveness of fixing or replacing a door lock depends on the severity of the issue. Repairing a minor problem, such as loose screws or a need for lubrication, is usually cheaper than replacing the entire lock. However, replacing the lock if it is severely damaged, outdated, or lacks security features may be a better long-term investment. New locks often have improved security features, enhancing your property's safety.
Many local hardware stores have the equipment to copy basic keys at a low cost. Some locations may have freestanding machines where you can pick out a blank and insert it and your original key into the duplicating machine.
Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.
Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.
As with any computer, smart locks can be hacked by someone with the technical skills to do so, but most people do not have that ability, making smart locks relatively safe. If you have any concerns about a compromised smart lock, opt for an encrypted smart lock, change your Wi-Fi password, and make sure that you only give out your password to trusted family and friends.
The good news is that, yes, you can change locks yourself. Many people find it’s an easy DIY project that requires few tools and not much expense (depending on which lock you’re installing). If you have trouble with any part of an installation, you can always call a locksmith to help finish installing them.
