"We used VKB for a complete bathroom makeover based on positive reviews online and found out how good they really are! This company knows how to do customer service and makes your home more beautiful! Junior was our designer and eased us through the design process. This was our first major renovation and Junior explained each step and what to expect. Jason Ali, project manager, was constantly coordinating, checking and communicating as the work unfolded. And to our delight, Pedro, crew leader, Ricardo, and Jose turned out to be our dream construction team. They were sensitive, polite, and skilled as they worked so hard each day. They kept things as neat as they could and without fail, cleaned up well each day. The project yielded some small problems and challenges but each was identified and solved. We could not be more pleased. Gary and Kate C"

"I hired Eco Power Works for addition of my house in Springfield, VA. My experience with Eco Power Works with Daryl has been exceptionally positive, and I have been thoroughly impressed with their professionalism and expertise throughout this project. The scope of the work range of ground leveling, concrete foundation, metal fabrication, electrical wiring, plumbing, HVAC, framing of the house, carpentry, painting, roofing, siding, demolition, bathroom, kitchen, and the general labor. They consistently recognized the importance of meeting critical project deadlines, ensuring that all milestones were achieved without compromising quality. With over two decades of experience in the construction industry, Daryl & John have cultivated a stellar reputation that has enabled them to forge lasting relationships with a trusted network of subcontractors. I offer my highest recommendation for Eco Power Works for any construction services. I look forward to work with them any future projects."

"Mike was great to work with. He promptly contacted us and met with us at the property I was considering buying. Had we bought the land there was an older house we needed taken down. He did a great job of explaining and walking me through our options. Unfortunately we didn t purchase the property but he will be my first call the next time we re in this situation again."

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"The design experience was excellent - MW Construction listened to our ideas, brought lots of new ideas, recycled proposed designs wth us, visited showrooms with us to select the right finishes and the right appliances. The construction experience was also spectacular - the quality of workmanship, professionalism and timeliness makes a huge difference compared to others and the assignment of a high quality customer focused project manager to keep you regularly informed on progress and respond quickly to any questions was brilliant. MW Construction are a great company to work with - we will use them again for other design/construction projects in our home."

"After talking to and receiving quotes from 6 contractors we selected BK Contractors (Bret) for our remodel. The project included creating a new home office that needed to be insulated and sound proofed, a home theater, a kid’s playroom, half bath, and craft / arts center. Additionally, the hot water heater needed to be relocated with new plumbing lines run. Bret and his team were very professional and great to work with!!! Starting with the design and contracting process, Bret was easy to work with. He was more than happy to spend as much time as needed to help design the project. Like most people, we had a limited budge. Bret was able to offer options that allowed us to stay within our budge while maximizing our design. As for the contract, Bret’s scope of work and contract was thorough and left no doubt we select the right contractor. Within days of signing the contract Bret had the building permit in order and his guys were hard at work. The framing, electrical and plumbing rough-in were competed within a few weeks. All of his employees are very professional, polite, respect your home as if is it their home. At the end of each day, the work site was swept clean and the trash taken out. Throughout the entire project Bret was ALWAYS available and just a phone call away. I would absolutely recommend BK Contractors and will certainly use him again."

"Picture Perfect did an outstanding job on my guest bathroom.  The project manager provided a materials selection list and all i had to do was write the SKU codes on the form to select my tile/tub/toilet/vanity/lighting/etc.  This method totally streamlined the entire process, and PPHI actually purchased the items themselves from Home Depot and sent us copies of the receipts on the final billing.  The workers were knowledgable and showed up on time every day of the project.  They even finished a day ahead of schedule and under the original budget!!  It's hard to find a good contractor and I am glad i found PPHI

"Margaaa arrived to my home on schedule with a two-person crew and a truck.  They were courteous, professional, patient, careful and absolutely perfect. Hauled away a heavy sleeper couch, an old lawnmower, parts from broken cabinetry and a bunch of random junk. Total time: less then 30 minutes.
Great guys and a great service. I will use them again.

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can finance new construction, though the process often requires a different type of loan than one for an existing property. There are several financing options available:

  • Construction-to-Permanent Loan: This is a common option where a single loan covers the building costs and then converts into a traditional mortgage once construction is complete and you move in.

  • Construction Loan (Stand-Alone): This type of loan provides funding only for the duration of the construction project. Once the house is built, you will need to pay the loan in full, typically by securing a separate, standard mortgage.

  • Builder Financing: Some custom homebuilders offer their own financing options, which may only require a down payment to begin the building process.

  • Bridge Loan: This can be a useful short-term loan to fund your new construction while you are in the process of selling your old home.

  • Home Equity Options: If you are building a second home, you might be able to use a home equity line of credit (HELOC) or a cash-out refinance on your current property.

It's also important to be aware that some lenders may have restrictions on financing for DIY house builds, so be sure to verify that you can secure financing before starting your project.

Modular homes last an average of between 50 and 75 years, and high-quality modular homes can last for 100 years with proper maintenance. For comparison, a standard home lasts 50 to 100 years and can push to 150 or longer with good maintenance. Modular homes provide better long-term value in that they are significantly more affordable and can last almost as long, but some buyers are wary of modular home longevity, so the actual value if you sell could be lower.

The average cost to renovate or remodel a home is $52,300, with most projects ranging from $19,500 to over $88,400. However, costs can vary significantly, from as low as $3,000 for a small project to $170,000 or more for a complete home remodel.

Several factors influence the total price, including:

  • Project Scope and Size: The extent of the renovations, whether it's a single room or the entire house.

  • Location: Geographic location affects labor and material costs.

  • Materials: The quality of materials chosen.

  • Room Type: Kitchen remodels ($14,500 - $70,000+) are generally more expensive than bedroom remodels ($1,500 - $5,500).

  • Other Factors: The time of year, complexity of the work, and any additions or expansions.

On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $15 and $60 for standard projects and up to $150 for luxury renovations.

Examples of specific project costs include:

  • Basement remodel: ~$20,200

  • Garage remodel: ~$27,900

  • Loft conversion: ~$20,200

  • Disability accommodation remodel: ~$4,300

  • Major home repairs: ~$11,700

If you are financing the project, note that some loan programs, like the FHA 203(k), may require a minimum project cost (e.g., $5,000) and will necessitate a home appraisal and professional cost estimates. Using a home renovation cost estimator can also help you budget for your project.

The early stages of building a house are harder than the later stages; laying the foundation and framing the house are two of the most challenging steps. However, it varies for everyone. Some people have difficulty installing HVAC, plumbing, and electricity, while others find it harder to plan the house and secure the necessary permits.

The term “cottage” is subjective, so there’s no rigid definition, but it generally refers to a small home with simple and purposeful architecture that embraces nature and focuses on charm over everything else. Cottages are typically 1 or 1 1/2-stories tall, usually with gabled roofs, and are built out of natural materials that help make the structure a part of the surrounding nature rather than something that stands out from it. A big part of what makes a cottage a cottage is the decor, which includes natural materials from the nearby area.
