"Mr. Ohi came to our home to inspect the foundation and support walls prior to us doing home renovation work. He did a thorough visual inspection and level measurements and located some small issues, but, thankfully, recommended that no foundation work be done. Mr. Ohi was pleasant to be with and knowledgeable about residential support structures."

"Having major remodel on lower level. Contractor tried to rope me into major work (and project delay) suggesting normal cracks on cinder block walls indicated a foundation issue. When I pushed back, he put project on hold stating I needed a structural engineer to certify. I called the first two people on home advisor locally and Omid got back to me in 2-3 min, was at my house within an hour and delivered a certified report within 3-4 hours. He listened to the situation and spoke with my contractor to hear his assessment before beginning his assessment measures. He directly pushed back on what contractor stated and provided simple solution for one crack that was more than hairline. Report was meticulous, he spoke with contractor directly, and saved this project. It was more affordable than what was suggested on average costs. While I couldn’t divorce from the unethical contractor mid project—I would have been stuck with no out without the work of Omid!"

"Bashir and Noorullah were a pleasure to work with. They were very detailed, providing a full set of plans to have a load-bearing wall removed in my home. Bashir was attentive and he and Noorullah answered all my questions. I would have no problem providing a strong recommendation for Structurist for any structural engineering needs especially when it comes to your home."

"Terry, Noor, and the whole team were incredibly professional and helpful with my project. I needed them to draft plans for an existing structure and they produced an outstanding bundle for me to submit to the county. The process was collaborative and they kept me informed on how things were going and what additional information they needed, and they also were great about including elements I wanted to see reflected in the plans. I highly recommend them and will likely hire them again if and when I decide to put an addition on my home."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Most lenders and homeowner’s insurance companies don’t mandate a structural engineer’s inspection, so in most cases, it’s not required. However, it’s a good idea to have one done anyway to ensure you know what you’re buying. You can use the report to carry out repairs after closing or even to negotiate the sale price before closing.

By careful planning and reinforcement to maintain structural integrity.

Cathedral ceilings make a statement in your home, but at the cost of your attic space. Normal attics are wide open, which allows warm air to move around and exit your home. Because of this, cathedral ceilings make your home less energy efficient and put your ceiling at risk of venting issues if you’re not careful. They also reduce your attic storage space, potentially cause an echo, and even make it harder to change a light bulb.

Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.

Yes, you can put a doorway in a structural wall; in fact, most exterior doors are set into structural walls. The project is a little more challenging than installing a door in a non-load-bearing wall because you need a structural engineer to assess the wall and make sure it’s safe to create a wall opening. Your engineer’s report will include instructions for your contractor on how and where to install additional supports, like steel headers above the door, to distribute the weight above to the wall on either side of the door.
