I highly recommend Tuck GC for all hardscaping projects. James “Tuck” Tucker is a hands-on owner who is involved in all aspects of his projects, including design and installation. Tuck helped me decide what to do with hardscaping in my yard, and after I decided to go with pavers for a renovated driveway he helped me select the pavers as well as stone for a new front walkway, even taking the time to meet me at Sislers Stone in Manassas to look at various options. Tuck’s crew, which includes father Santos and his son Sergio, also is fantastic. They are incredibly hard workers, and regularly worked 10-12 hour days on my project and even worked a full Saturday and Sunday one weekend because of concern about upcoming cold weather. TL;DR Tuck is the man. He knows everything about VDOT aprons and driveways. The VDOT inspectors even know him and his reputation precedes him. Tuck's prices are in the mid-high range but you get what you pay for: excellent workmanship, incredible transparent service, and a driveway that will pass inspections. The Long Version: In one week, I interviewed at least 10 driveway contractors who each had very different ideas about what I could legally do to install a driveway in my front yard which at the time had 3 trees, a retaining wall, and no apron (curb cut-out). One contractor said I could do it with no permitâ wrong. Another said I needed to ask the countyâ also wrong. And another said I needed to talk to VDOT not the county but that was on me to take care of. After discovering that the last guy was right, I contacted VDOT and became overwhelmed by all of the paperwork I needed to prepare for a permit. That's when I Googled "VDOT apron" and the first search result was Tuck GC. I read a couple of their articles and knew that these guys had the know-how to help us get a driveway and they would take care of the confusing VDOT paperwork. When Tuck pulled up, he patiently listened as I explained what we needed. Then he shared what we could do, what we should do, and provided a few excellent suggestions to improve our initial ideas. We decided to add a 20' double-car pad and replace our existing walkway since it had no control joints (to prevent cracking). Tuck gave us a rough-estimate right away and came back the next day with a formal proposal. Let me be clear, Tuck was the first contractor out of 10 to provide a real proposal. One guy actually sent me a photo of his notepad covered in chicken scratch. Most never even followed up! Out of the 10 quotes, Tuck's was 4th most expensive. In other words, there were 6 cheaper quotes, and 3 more expensive quotes. But none of those 9 knew how to install a new apron legally. Only Tuck offered to help us from A to Z. With winter coming, we knew we were in a time crunch because no respectable concrete team would pour concrete in freezing temperatures. We really wanted to sign the contract but this felt like a large project for us, it was going to be expensive. Tuck was great in helping us adjust the payment into 4 deliverables. After working that out, we signed the contract and he fulfilled every deliverable. Tuck quickly got us through permit process, we hired a great tree removal team to take out our 3 trees, and then Tuck kept us in the loop as his crews caught up with their preceding jobs. We waited 2-3 weeks and at any point that we had a question or wanted to update him on tree removal, Tuck was just a text away. Finally, he got us an install date. He took extra care to remind us a day earlier that his team needed the street clear. Tuck's reminders helped us coordinate shuffling our cars and our neighbors' cars around. Installation lasted two days and it went smoother than he had promised. With zero rainfall, Tuck's crews wasted no time demolishing the retaining wall and walkway, then prepped our front yard. The three dump trucks picked up the waste on the first day, and the two concrete trucks with his team poured with precision on the second day. Now here we are on the third day and my wife and I had big, ridiculous grins on our faces as we walked about our new driveway. We can barely wait the 7 days to finally pull our cars in! There are so many more details to this process, if you want to know more all I can do is urge you to call Tuck GC. That guy knows his business.

We hired Tuck to widen our driveway, tear out the old sidewalk and install a decorative stone walkway in front and pour a concrete sidewalk around the side of the house to the back door. We found him to be a man of integrity, someone we could trust to follow through and do quality work. It was Tuck's design, not ours, that created the beautiful walkway. His crew is obviously experienced and it was amazing to watch them work so efficiently and with such skill. The masons who brought Tuck's design to life are also very talented and skilled at what they do. Tuck remained on sight through the completion of the pour and followed up regularly while the masons layed the stone. He also followed up a few weeks after completion to make sure everything was to our satisfaction.

Tuck was a pleasure to work with -- listening to us as we explained what we wanted to accomplish with our somewhat complicated driveway that slants down hill toward the house. He recommended ways to improve the slope and also install a drain in front of the garage door to capture the water that had previously been a problem. He worked closely with us on the design in which we had color mixed into the concrete for a subtle earth tone look. The crew was well organized, hard working, fast and neat. The various equipment and concrete trucks arrived like clockwork. The finished driveway is beautiful and exceeds our expectations.

I contracted Tuck GC to install a paver driveway and a flagstone patio (comprised of a full range of colored stones). High-quality materials were used throughout, and the craftsmanship speaks for itself. Tuck is very responsive and diligent when it comes to customer service. He communicated his plans and ideas to me throughout the project, as he was on-site the entire time, and nothing was left to my imagination. Both he and his crew paid particular attention to detail. His workers were punctual and friendly, and they took pride in their work. In my case, they even worked Saturday and Sunday to complete the job in record-setting time. The workmen did a thorough job of cleaning up and removing the debris during and after the job and took good care not to damage my property. I would highly recommend Tuck GC, and I plan to use them again for future projects. Friends and neighbors who passed by my house were genuinely impressed with what they saw. And the pricing for the project was competitive.

Tuck was a breeze to work with and the new driveway and expanded apron came out amazing. His crew is top notch and worked extremely hard during the two day installation. He communicated throughout the project and took care of all the permits through VDOT for me. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a new driveway and especially if they would like a new apron as they are a specialty of him and his crew.

Tuck and his crew are AMAZING. Our new driveway looks incredible. I am so glad we had it done. They were extremely fast as well. I chose Tuck because I wanted to have our apron redone as well to match the rest of the driveway. I think a lot of people don't want to go through the hassle of dealing with the DTA and getting approval. Well, Tuck handled ALL OF IT for me, from start to finish. His price was right on point too. After working with several contractors on a fair number of major projects, it was a true pleasure working with Tuck and the TUCK GC team on our concrete driveway project. As the project was scoped out, we discussed many options, and once we came up with a plan, TUCK GC coordinated the rest of the work. The workmanship was awesome. The crew paid attention even to the small details such as saving the sod and replacing it after the work was completed. As you might expect working with concrete is not the cleanest process, but the crew cleaned up and restored the work area to look as good as the new concrete. We were ecstatic. I recommend TUCK GC without reservation. His professional and courteous business etiquette is a breath of fresh air. I am sure we will hire TUCK GC again on future concrete projects.

My wife and I were extremely impressed with Tuck GC. We found out the owner, James Tuck, went into business himself after being one of the top dogs at another large construction company. He created his own company with the understanding that the best way to complete a project correctly the first time, while also providing top customer service is making a conscious decision to keep his company small. What a difference. James spent an incredible amount of time with me walking through an outdoor patio project and replacing my roof (separate occasions). As he was reviewing the different projects with me, he would provide me with the positives and negatives of each option. He’d wait for me to ask him, ‘what do you recommend?’. Eventually he realized I was interested in longer lasting quality so he stuck to those suggestions. The amount of construction and county ordinance knowledge he has blew me away. This is one of the few guys that you can trust to do the project the right way from the start. I highly recommend him AND his team. While our roof was being replaced, there were materials and boxes on the drive way, naturally. My wife was walking to get to the house and one of the crew ran in front of my wife to create a walkway for her to easily get by. Those are details tough to find now-a-days.

Tuck just finished a crazy driveway, patio and shed pad project for me and it is amazing! Seriously, check out the video on You Tube youtu.be/N7MsokkJjB0. My front yard was super steep so he had to dig it out and build retaining walls on either side, wide enough that we could pull in and open the car doors. He also tore out and re did my front walkway, he built stairs from the driveway's center to the walkway, and wound up tearing out my entire old back porch and pouring me a new one with a really nice drainage solution. Then he poured a shed pad complete with a turn around for my motorcycle. The results are absolutely amazing. I have the nicest driveway I've ever seen. I first contacted Tuck over a year ago to get an estimate, but couldn't pull off a project of that magnitude back then. As soon as I could afford it, I only called him. (And somehow he remembered me from the year before!). He was at our site every day for the entire week and was just great to have around. Even my dog loves this guy. When things went sideways with the shed construction (which was being built by another company) he jumped right in to help and got us back on track. If you're having any work done on your house, call Tuck.

We replaced and enlarged our drive and added pavers for accent, then did a second curb cut and installed ribbon drive of pavers over concrete, plus a bunch of other concrete and gravel leading to our backyard shed site. Tuck did some research and helped us select the materials before we signed the contract. He was onsite for the critical tasks and made decisions that improved the end result at no additional cost, as well as recommended changes that I accepted for an attractive price. No doubt his active participation resulted in a better job than what we had previously designed. His crew is hardworking and careful and tolerated me working with them almost the whole time. They cleaned up well and did a few small extras that enabled us to use 99% of the material purchased. Low waste, quality skilled labor, and flexibility. I could have spent less money with someone else but probably not achieved such good results. So Tuck delivers value. Having personally built a few houses, using contractors for big jobs like concrete that require a crew, Tuck GC exceeded my expectations. And exceeded my wife's -- which I fail to do regularly!

Recently I had a patio door installed by Tuck GC Contractors. The door size was bigger than the standard size. In pricing a custom-made door, I found out that it would cost me approximately $1,000 additional cost. Tuck recommended that we order the standard size and add framing and drywall to enclose it. The cost of the build-in was a fraction of the cost for the custom door. And they did a beautiful job! You are unable to detect the added framing, and it is airtight! The door is beautiful and the workmanship is superb! I have also used them for other contracting needs. Tuck explains step-by-step so that there are no surprises! I will definitely use them again!

Tuck did a great job installing our driveway. Very satisfied with how it turned out. He was very responsive and finished in a timely manner. Also put in a new walkway to repair the old one and a new stoop as ours was falling apart.

I haven't worked with too many contractors before so I was nervous to choose one and got several quotes. Tuck was one of the less expensive quotes, plus he immediately made me feel at ease about my project. I wanted to redo my back patio but I didn't have a firm vision. He looked at it with me, drew up some ideas and helped me determine exactly how to proceed. We included an awesome retaining wall and lighting! Then he was with me every step of the way... I work during the day so I couldn't be there when the work was being done... but Tuck was there and even sent me videos showing me the teams' progress throughout the day. He and the crew were working until dusk one evening when they wanted to complete the layout to be ready for concrete the next morning. Tuck was always checking in with my satisfaction, and one day stopped by for this purpose (and to pick up a payment) and noticed a small project I was working on inside. He offered to help and spent an extra 30-45 minutes with me getting that work underway. Even though the team of laborers he works with are a trusted team he's worked with for many years... he is still on-site regularly and is very hands-on. I felt confident in the work being done and was excited to come home every day and see the progress. And on top of that, they finished sooner than expected and I've been able to enjoy my patio on the few rainless days we've had already this spring! It looks beautiful and I couldn't be happier with the work done and the service and care provided.

Tuck GC recently rebuilt two patio sections around our house, complete with planters, a stacked stone retaining wall, and new stairs. They also handled the demo of the existing patio, wall, and stairs. The end result is gorgeous, and we are very happy not only with the product, but with the process. Tuck was easy to work with, flexible, and honest. Halfway through the project, we were so pleased with how it was going that we asked him to add on some additional work: install stacked stone veneer over a nearby existing brick wall. He added the work on without a problem, at a reasonable price. Tuck has a great attention to detail and really seems to care about the quality of his work. He is also enthusiastic and friendly, and a pleasure to work with. We highly recommend him, and we hope to hire him again for major rebuild projects around our house.
