31 years of experience

Julian Enterprises was established in the Richmond, VA, area in 1994, having previously done business as Julian & Associates in northern NH. We have chosen to remain a small operation in order to develop and maintain personal relationships with our customers, always seeking their satisfaction and return business. Typically, estimates are free; the exception is typically in a situation when a Realtor might need a professional estimate to establish value in making a sale. In such cases, there is a minimum $50 charge for the estimate, which is credited if the buyer or seller opts to have the work done. There is no standard trip charge; an exception is applied to jobs which are at least 45 min. away from our home base, in which case a one hour labor charge is applied per day. Our administrative fee remains at the modest rate of $5 per invoice, and our current hourly rate is well below typical of the industry as we desire to remain affordable to those on tight budgets and fixed incomes. Also, we do not mark up for materials - what we pay is what you pay; there is no added percentage, as is common. Time spent toward purchasing materials is considered part of the job and charged at the standard hourly rate. We specialize in "honey-do" lists, inspection punch lists (such as when a house is being sold), pre-sale maintenance and repairs, and any number of small tasks needing to be done around your home, from assembling a crib for the arrival of a baby to replacing those old ceiling fans and light fixtures; from hanging the pictures in your new home to rescreening your porch. Various maintenance and repairs might include rebuilding that toilet that doesn't flush well, pointing up the brick steps on your front porch, and replacing those bad pieces of siding. We might recommend subcontractors for other specialties, but we have them work directly with the customer unless the customer prefers us to take on that role. Our business is not limited to the small tasks. We will also design and build a new deck, storage shed, or screened porch, as well as remodel your kitchen or bathroom, or finish out the attic or basement.

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.

Any issue that affects the structural integrity or soundness of a home is considered a structural issue. In addition to foundation cracks, other signs of structural issues include roof leaks, bowing walls, sloping floors, gaps around windows and doors, and more.

Regular sealing, repainting, and checking for wood rot or pest infestations help maintain longevity.

Yes, professional installations include reinforced corner posts to ensure durability.
