"We hired Signature Craft to fix and finish a porch that was started by another contractor. Signature Craft got all the licenses, inspections and made the porch up to code. They were very knowledgeable, friendly and dependable. We will definitely hire them again!"

"My construction job went extremely well. Melissa and James are GREAT to work with. They are responsive, friendly, accommodating, and their work and staff are awesome! I would definitely call them in the future and I would HIGHLY recommend them to anyone. I am a tough sell on most things and they won me over. Unfortunately contractors get a bad reputation due to the nature of the business however, they are the direct opposite. I can’t say enough my home looks brand new. Attached my photos are before and after. The burgundy shutters is the before picture and the black shutters are the after pictures."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You may need a permit to install your window seat. Even though it's an indoor modification, some municipalities require permits for any built-ins added to homes. Check with your carpenter or, if you're DIY-ing, do some research on your city's requirements.

Balcony construction or replacement typically requires a building permit from your local permitting authority. Safety and building integrity are the main reasons for the need to obtain a permit and the subsequent inspections. In some cases, especially cantilevered balconies, your municipality may also require the oversight and signature of a structural engineer.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

A-frame homes are on the smaller side. While there’s no set square footage amount it has to be, it will usually come in around 1,000 square feet or smaller.
