"LUX came out, gave us a proposal and fixed price and carefully spec'd out the work. They had a large hickory tree to work around and not damage; their workers were polite, hardworking, competent, and cleaned up daily. The project was finished within the time frames planned and within the affordable budget we'd set out. It was a difficult project due to the hillside they were working on, and the large old patio stones that had to be taken up carefully and then reset at the end of the project. We were VERY please with the planner, the foreman, the workers and the quality of the work overall. We would hire them again for foundation and stone work."

"NV was the only foundation company that responded to my estimate request and was very responsive in scheduling an estimate. They also called a day in advance to confirm. Bruce came out on time, gave a straightforward assessment of the issue (cosmetic cracks in parging), provided explanations of what may have caused the cracks, and offered options of how a masonry company could repair the issue. He was friendly and professional. I'd definitely recommend Bruce @ NV for those looking to determine issues with their foundation."

"I had previously hired ET Contractors for tree removal work and now wasnted a paver patio installed. Julio Excobar came out and provided a very competitive price, and included a firepit in he plan. His team showed up as promised. The work was done beautifully, and the site cleaned up. Additionally, Julio's team used the stones from an old patio and installed a walkway to our deck. The project looks better than was hoped for. I will hire ET Contractors again for my my next need,"

Customers say: Quick response

"I just finished Brick & Tuck repairs by Aalcon Company (Jim Alls). They were excellent, and they diagnosed the structural problems as well or better than the engineer. I was very pleased with their service and the quality work. They went ahead and did other minor repairs on the brickwork at no cost. They helped with exploratory holes to determine the structural issues, and brainstormed various solutions. Will hire them again next year for major paverstone work."

"The price was right, and the steps themselves seem to be well installed.  However, there is red writing on the stone of one of the steps. We initially thought the letters were written in chalk for the sake of the construction process and would eventually just wash out; however, several months later (and after much scrubbing) they're still there.  We called Six Penny two weeks ago and told them about the writing and they said they would send someone in the next day or two to take a look at it, but no one has come to look at it and the writing is still there.

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Clean regularly, check for cracks, and inspect the chimney annually for safety.

Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

Yes, it is usually possible to repair a damaged brick mailbox. A professional brick mason or masonry contractor can perform the repairs. They can assess the damage, provide an estimate, and help you determine if the repair is worthwhile based on the mailbox's value and the extent of the damage. The repair process may involve sourcing replacement bricks and mortar. Damaged bricks can be cut out and replaced, or the mortar joints can be cut out and retucked. It's important to note that the new mortar may differ in color from the original. If the mailbox insert itself is damaged, it can typically be cut out and replaced as well. If your brick mailbox has been completely destroyed, you should check with your local building code enforcement office before rebuilding, as some areas do not allow brick mailboxes due to the potential hazard they pose to drivers.

Not all cracks in brick indicate foundation problems. For instance, small hairline cracks can occur as a new construction settles. However, larger cracks are often a sign of a more severe issue. Indicators of a potential foundation problem include long horizontal cracks, "stair-step" cracks, vertical cracks that appear indoors, or any crack that widens at the top. Other signs of structural damage to look for are uneven floors and doors or windows that stick. These issues could be caused by problems with the soil beneath the home or an overgrown tree.

On average, a well-built brick mailbox can last between 30 and 100 years. The insert that holds mail inside the mailbox may last 15 to 25 years before it needs to be replaced. If a mailbox needs to be fixed due to damage, make sure you know who to hire for brick repair.
