Mottern Masonry Design

We've used Jeff and the Mottern Masonry team for several projects at our home and would 100% use them again. They continuously exceed expectations and perform solid work. We've had them stone our front stoop and walkway, put in a stamped concrete patio in our backyard and also some landscaping work in the front yard. Jeff and his team are very responsive and perform the work in a timely manner. We would highly recommend them.

They repaired and refurbished our flagstone walkway, steps, patio and tended to our brick areas. They were on time, left things immaculate each day, and ensured the results were outstanding. I highly recommend Mottern Masonry. They did a fantastic job replacing our deteriorating concrete stoop and installing a flagstone walkway. From their initial quick response and quote to the professionalism and artistic quality of the masonry work, Jeff and his team did great work. They showed up on time and worked around the weather. The crew were friendly, courteous and are experts at what they do. They are not the cheapest you can find, but if you want the highest quality work, they are among the best in the area.

In 2021, Mottern Masonry installed a 20 x 20 ft stamped concrete patio in my backyard. Half of the patio is under a screen porch. Half is exposed to the elements. This patio was installed in the Spring of 2021. In 2022 the patio showed damage. Pitting. Flaking. Mottern sent a crew to rectify it. Two years later it has failed again. It is only the portion that is exposed to the elements. Mottern will not fix it. They say it is not within their 1 year warranty. So if you before you spend five or ten thousand dollars on a patio, consider this as a possible outcome.

I worked with Mottern Masonry to have my two flagstone walkways repaired. The mortar joints were cracked and worn, and several stones were loose. Jeff responded and came onsite to review the work quickly. His team did an excellent job, and the walkways are better than when they were 1st put in. The team also did additional work they found to address walkway foundation issues at no additional cost. Mottern Masonry does excellent work at a fair price, I look forward to giving them additional business in the future.

Mottern Masonry did a great job replacing our deteriorating pool surround. They took the time to go over all of our options and we decided that stamped concrete was the best for us. Their crew communicated kept the project moving despite the spring rain. It was a huge job. Their pricing was competitive, not the cheapest but you get what you pay for! Couldn’t be happier!

We contracted with Mottern about 10 years ago to have a retaining wall built to replace a poorly constructed wall holding up the driveway. The wall was block on footer and it has held beautifully. When we original had the wall built, we decided against covering it with decorative stone. Jeff told us at the time that they would come back and add it if we ever changed our mind. Here we are ten years later deciding to add the stone. We called Mottern because the wall they built has had no issues (previous iterations of the wall had plenty of issues). The stone covering job was done quickly and professionally and looks great. If you're looking for quality, Mottern is for you.

We felt the quote was high, but along with that number came the confidence that they would do it correctly, and they did. We even asked them to add another layer to a wall they were building and they did that without hesitation or complaint. We are very pleased with the end product. Mottern Masonry removed our gazebo and replaced it with a stamped concrete patio and stone fireplace. The patio is partially lined with 25 inch tall sitting wall. They also repaired our brick front walkway, some stone work on the façade of our home and some minor pavement cracks. The project went exactly how Jeff Mottern said it would go, and turned out better than we could have imagined. Jeff grew up in the masonry business and it shows. Jeff and his team are gifted professionals, kind and excellent communicators. Weather permitting, they worked non-stop from the moment they started until the project was completed. Right on time and right on budget. The stone work on the wall and the fireplace is stunning. And when all of the building was completed, they graded and seeded the area around the patio, covered it with straw, and cleaned up the work areas as if they hadn’t been there. This was as perfect a home improvement project experience as we could hope to have. And to top it off, Jeff has a wonderful network of experienced carpenters, electricians and other resources to tap into as your projects may require. We are using three of those additional resources so far. We cannot recommend Mottern Masonry more.

I recently had a stamped concrete driveway done by Mottern Masonry and it looks great. Jeff came by initially to assess the job and write a bid. He was very attentive to my requests then gave his own recommendations about options for doing the driveway/walkway etc that would make better use of the space I had while keeping costs reasonable. Other companies simply gave me a bid on what I asked and didn't offer advice on how to optimize the space, so I appreciated that Jeff presented different options I could consider - it's quite clear he's experienced in hardscapes and has been doing this for awhile! Jeff wrote a bid the same day and the team broke ground within a week, then had the driveway completely done and sealed within a week of the start date. The entire process went smoothly and the team at Mottern Masonry was timely and professional. I highly recommend Jeff and the team at Mottern Masonry!

Mottern did a fantastic job designing and installing a large flagstone-on-concrete patio for us. The work included excavating and leveling the site, pouring and re-enforcing the slab, and selecting and purchasing the stone, brick and other materials. In addition to the patio, Mottern also filled in an approx. 12 sq/ft section of brick wall where a door had been converted to a window. The filled-in brick and mortar matches the original 50-year old wall perfectly. Overall, the entire Mottern crew was prompt, responsive, professional, and very skillful. We would definitely use Mottern again.

Working with Mottern Masonry on our stamped concrete patio was a great experience! They quickly responded to my initial request and brought great suggestions to our first meeting. The work was completed on time and for slightly under budget. The team was very careful and considerate. They had to move a handful of plants for the work, which they did with care and put them back exactly where they found them at the end. Most importantly, the end product looks absolutely great! Mottern Masonry did an excellent job with a fair price on a patio, and multiple walkways. The owner Jeff came out and provided an estimate and referrals in a very timely manner. We hired Mottern Masonry in June of 2023 to pour over 27 yards of stamped and brushed concrete around our house. The company is fully insured and licensed, which I personally verified with the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). Jeff listened to our desired outcome and even provided some course corrections based on his many years of experience. The job was able to be scheduled quickly and his crew were professional and extremely hard working. All issues were addressed immediately and corrected by the crew. We were very happy with all the work completed and the crew’s cleanup of the site. We plan to use Mottern Masonry again on other projects!

We are extremely pleased with the work Mottern did for us, from removing our old wooden deck, to pouring a new stamped concrete patio, to clean up and sealing. All work was done well and the entire crew was very respectful of the property. Everything was of the utmost professionalism and quality. The work done was excellent and beautifully finished. We had all of the tops of two levels of an outdoor brick staircase redone and could not be more pleased with the matching color of mortar and the attention to detail. The employees were a delight to work with and absolutely respectful of the surrounding plants and trees we hoped to preserve. We could not give a more emphatic recommendation and will, if the need arises, work with Mottern Masonry again without hesitation.

Excellent. I called about repairs to my front steps. Jeff came out to 3stimate within a week and delivered a written estimate inside. He also helped m3 coordinate repair/reinstallation of the wobbly iron railings that had led some bricks to crack. The repairs complete within about 10 days. So artfully done that you can’t tell the new work from the original bricks. A very professional approach to a very small job. Thank you Jeff!
