"The Patch Boys assigned Sean to perform the repair work to our daughter's ceiling which required installing a new piece of drywall into the ceiling. After layering an initial layer of compound the work was complete. Then Sean came back and the following day and sanded it and placed a final layer on. Fantastic follow through and professionalism. I highly recommend. They were a little more expensive than their competitors but worth it."

"We had an acre dry pond we wanted filled in. They gave a very competitive bid, showed up on time, listened to everything we wanted and did the job in record time despite the fact it rained most of the days they worked on it. They had great equipment, were knowledgeable, informative, friendly and were very communicative. I would definitely use them again."

"I saved the contact information of this company from a painting job they did for me a few years ago, because the job was so terrific. I reached out to them recently to stain the trim on my house, and paint my wrought iron fence. Their quote was one of three and not the highest. The crew was very professional, cleaned up their equipment and supplies daily, and were hard workers. The supervising personnel were very nice to deal with, and monitored my project closely daily. Every inch of my fence was inspected and marked for touchups as needed by the project manager prior to my signing off. I DEFINITLY RECOMMEND this company,, and will employ their services in the future . They take pride their work and stand behind their work until the customer if satisfied."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

The two most common drywall thicknesses for ceilings are 1/2-inch and 5/8-inch. For most standard residential applications, 1/2-inch drywall is sufficient and widely used. It provides adequate support and is lighter and easier to handle during installation compared to thicker sheets. However, 5/8-inch drywall is often used for specific cases where additional benefits are needed. It is heavier but provides superior sound dampening and fire resistance. You should consider using 5/8-inch drywall for ceilings in commercial buildings, between a garage and a living space, or above a finished basement to meet building codes or for enhanced soundproofing.

While you can put new drywall over old drywall, it’s not always the best option. In some cases, drywalling over drywall can make it harder to find wires and pipes behind your walls and conceal more serious problems with your walls. It can also make the room smaller. On the plus side, putting drywall over drywall can improve soundproofing and insulation. Plus, it’s often less expensive than tearing down and adding new drywall.

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

If the holes in the plaster are small, you can fill them with layers of patching plaster until they’re filled. After it dries, you can sand the plaster and paint over it. If the hole is much larger, consider using bonding plaster first and then a layer of patching plaster, completing the process with sanding and a layer of paint.

Regular dusting, occasional repainting, and avoiding harsh scrubbing preserve the finish.
