"We are so happy with our new walkway, patio, and stone borders. Carrate Landscaping did excellent work, and they were so easy to work with. They exceeded all our expectations. They were on time, and their crew worked hard for several days until the work was completed. They took some Oklahoma patio stone we already had and turned it into a work of art. They even moved some sprinklers around to accommodate what we needed. They had great ideas and also worked in our suggestions. We know this project will raise the value of our property. You will NOT be disappointed with this contractor. Good ones like this are hard to find. We will certainly use them again if the opportunity arises. Thanks to the entire Carrate crew!"

Customers say: Quality work

"Tom and Brad did excellent work on repairing and re-staining our deck. They hold themselves to very high standards and treated our home like their own. They're self-sufficient so there wasn't a need to keep tabs on the status of the project and the time frame that worked for them (weather considered, they're as quick as possible without the quality suffering) worked for us. It was nice to just be able to say what we wanted and them just make it happen with both labor and materials. Very professional and they are a great team. I would definitely hire them again for any job they'd accept and would refer them to friends and family."

"Father son duo came out and transformed my gross back deck into something that my daughter and I will enjoy for many years! So pleased with their work and would use again in a heartbeat. Strongly recommend!!! Great fair price, was quick to get the job done. Left no mess behind. Very friendly and did a wonderful job in explaining what needed to be done and providing numerous options on how to proceed. 5 stars!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Cold temperatures can make your deck boards contract. If they don’t contract evenly, they can put pressure on the deck screws and cause them to pop out, making a noticeable sound. Winterizing your deck can help prevent this from happening.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Most building codes require that spindles or balusters on deck and stair railings be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard, often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' is designed to prevent small children or pets from slipping through the railing. A good way to visualize this is that a 4-inch sphere should not be able to pass between two spindles. For the same safety reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck floor should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is crucial to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

A sunroom will add more value to your home than a deck, but with a much higher up-front cost. Depending on its construction and function, a sunroom may be counted as additional living space, while a deck is strictly an outdoor feature. Both will increase your home’s value, but the sunroom will have a much bigger effect.
